Mike,
Here's what I posted on cdp. it is on-topic with your frustrations
here.
I share your frustration and respect your efforts. I'm just taking a
little different path, myself.
Feel free to contact me privately.
Respectfully,

1. To be fair, Mike Preece already started one, a Google group called
"u2users". Same name as email list, but completely independent.
Speaking only for myself, while I like Google's user interface, I don't
see the point of 2 forums. There's much more traffic on u2-users email
list than the Google group ( *cough* when up *cough* - actually this
is the only outage like this that I am aware of. To be fair.) If we
were starting from scratch, I'd vote for Mike's solution, but we're
not, so my loyalties remain with the email list.
Having ONE common place is paramount.
2. U2UG is smack dab in the middle of making some major back- &
frontend changes to the lists, the web-site, and the various U2UG
forums. It's a shame this outage occurred so soon before the mechanism
causing it is to be changed.
3. The user interface (email &/or browser (notice the "&") ) must be -
and will be - separated out from the underlying function of managing
posts to threads and ongoing on-topic conversation. Google allows
both. Hey, we're a bunch of database geeks. We understand separating
data from interface(s). Nothing new here!
The idea is ONE repository, ONE backend & remain flexible about
different user interfaces. Presently, web-browsing & email are the two
popular ones.
4. Currently, U2UG has custodial care of the u2 lists, which Clif
Oliver started and then maintained for so many years.
Anyone can subscribe, even if not a U2UG member. (www.u2ug.org, "Email
Lists" on left menu)
The user interface is currently email (with browser-based search of
archives).
U2-users - on-topic. mostly tech, some marketing
U2-community - water cooler chat among friends
SBsolutions - System Builder
RBsolution - RedBack
There are other U2UG forums, & they are currently web-based, with email
notification if desired. Again, expect changes.
5. Please feel free to email me personally if you have strong opinions
or wishes. I'm on the board for another year. Or post here. Or to
u2-users list.
6. If you really care, u2ug elections are coming up. Nominations (&
volunteering) for the board are open until Jan 10. Email b...@u2ug.org.
I will keep you appraised of upcoming improvements.
