Subject: HELP! Need to convert Unidata file to Windows platform.
I didn't want to cross post, so here is the original post I made to the
Unidata forum that seems not active at all:

http://groups.google.com/group/Unidata/browse_thread/thread/6ee3f9dcf...

In case the post is deleted for whatever reason I also cut and pasted:

"Some background.  We just purchased a company that ran on VAX systems
that have not been maintained for about 3 or 4 years old.  I have to
take a file from the VAX system's accounting program and convert it in
a way where I can query it on a SQL or even Excel.  There is NO
extension and the I.T. guy tells me it is Unicode format - not sure how

he did it, but he copied the one file onto a CD.  It is most likely the

DB file and not an export from a query or anything.  How do I convert
this file to a comma delimited file that Windows applications can deal
with (or another DB file like SQL or dBase or even Excel) ?  I do not
have the original application to read the file here, all I have is SQL
7.0, Access 2003, Excel, and any odbc drivers that comes with these
programs.  What other information do I need to get from the I.T. guys
about this file to help me deal with this problem?

Also please let me know if I am in the wrong forum and direct me to the

correct one.

Thanks in advance."

Can you open it in WordPad? If so, does it appear to have plain ASCII
characters interpersed with "special" characters? If so, those special
characters may be hex "FF", "FE", "FD" and "FC"s. If so, you might have
a UniData file or files. Let's see if there's a way to go forward once
we know these things.
