Subject: Half city's youth 'take cocaine'
Whilst we muddle around with cannabis, a drug still safer than alcohol and
tobacco, this disgusting rubbish[*] is finding its' way up kids noses. It
wouldn't surprise me if they've switched from the cannabis plant to this
chemical extract due to this hysteria led by the very befuddled and the
exceedingly hypocritical.

[*] I've tried it - it's awful shit.

Half city's youth 'take cocaine'

More than 50% of young people in Liverpool admit to having taken cocaine,
a new report claims.

The finding is part of research that shows an "epidemic" of drug use, with
respondents saying they take drugs and drinking to enhance their sex
lives.

Researchers from Liverpool John Moores University surveyed youngsters from
nine European cities in their study.

Drug and alcohol charity Addaction said the city had been unfairly
pinpointed but the findings were not shocking.

The poll was carried out among 1,341 youngsters and was led by Professor
Mark Bellis, from the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores
University (LJMU).

It showed a third of men and a quarter of women, aged 16 to 35, drank to
increase their chances of having sex.

An "epidemic" of recreational drug use and binge drinking is exposing
millions of youngsters to drugs, which increases their chance of unsafe
sex and increased sexual partners, experts warned.

The authors said these substances altered their sexual decisions and
increased their chances of unsafe and regretted sex.

"For many, substance use has become an integral part of their strategic
approach to sex, locking them into continued use," they said.

'Unfairly' targeted

The cities included were Liverpool, Vienna, Brno in the Czech Republic,
Berlin, Athens, Venice, Lisbon, Ljubljana in Slovenia, and Palma, Spain.

But Elliot Elam, spokesperson for Addaction, the UK's largest drugs and
alcohol charity, said: "I think this report does pinpoint Liverpool a
little unfairly.

"Liverpool was the only British city surveyed and it's like saying Palma
is representative of the whole of Spain - it's not.

"Although I'm not totally shocked by the statistics, we know we have a
problem as compared to the rest of Europe in some areas.

"Drugs, particularly cocaine, are very prevalent and readily available."

He accepted that people "experiment", but often do not have access to
enough information to make proper decisions about what they take.

"There is still an acceptability and cachet to taking cocaine," he said.

"[But] most young won't take drugs in isolation they won't just take
cocaine, ecstasy or cannabis, they will take whatever is available."

A hit of crack would work out cheaper.  Heroin would be cheaper and
wouldn't string them out so much.  The thing is it has been available
to the middle class for years.  As the price drops then it becomes more
popular all over the place.  I expect groups of kids are all chipping
in to buy half a gramme.  One line each if they are lucky.

There are radical Islamists who are trying to flood this country with
all manner of class A substances.

A while ago, some Italian researchers decided to work out how much
cocaine is _actually_ being taken, by a rather devious route. They
worked out what happens to cocaine in a person's body, which is it
gets turned into something else and excreted in urine.

The metabolite only comes from cocaine, and the only natural source of
it is cocaine taken by people. So, work out how much metabolite is in
the sewage and you know how much cocaine is being taken per day by
people.

Turns out the figure is about ten times higher than any previous
research (all based on asking people and guesstimating an answer) had
said. Ordinarily, I'd be highly suspicious of such an outlying figure,
but here, what with this being the only quantitative study made and
all the rest being subject to huge reporting bias, I'm inclined to
believe it.

This result (and the "Me Too!" one done in London, with similar
results) tells us a few things:

Firstly, the level and amount of cocaine use is much, much higher than
the Government thought.

Secondly, well over 95% of cocaine users are undetected by law
enforcement, medical science or anything.

Thirdly, the overwhelming majority of people who use cocaine suffer no
detectable ill effects from it (otherwise we'd know about it).

Finally, data from the police shows that the street price of cocaine
is going down. The number of users isn't likely to be decreasing, so
what is happening is that the amount of cocaine smuggled in is
increasing.

We're losing this war on drugs.

Let's try something different, please. Fighting a losing war that we
know we cannot win is incredibly stupid.

This just isn't true. Cocaine does increase the risk of heart disease.
IIRC a high proportion of patients admitted to hospital for a heart
attack in their 40's show traces of cocaine in their system.

It was lost over 20 years ago.

Repeating something that's already failed expecting a different outcome
shows some kind of psychosis.

Well if you were talking about a person then you would be
correct but you are talking about a government and the term psychosis
would not apply.  Dysfunctional would apply I believe and the prisoner
of special interests would work.
