Makes sense to me though i still think the best answer is to make DUI a
felony
with automatic multi-year license suspension.  Let's stop coddling these
killers and maimers.

lawyers, senaturds.

I've been saying that for years, maybe make it 20 in fact.  It's crazy to
let 15 yo kids drive but the auto industry makes a fortune off car crashes
and if they had their way 5 yo kids could drive.

Too bad there isn't a REAL test for 16yo's. There are some that can
handle it. The best thing that happened to me is wrecking my Bug 1 1/2
days after getting my license. Tore it all to hell but hurt no one and
I got it home without any cop involvement. It brought my ass down a
few notches. Started driving a school bus at 16 1/2, a dump truck at
17 and a tractor trailer at 18. 2.5 mill. truck miles later I have had
1 ticket for running a yellow..err red light (reduced to I.O.) and 2
accidents where I was not at fault. 1 was a double fatality but I had
no control over it.

Better to raise the driving age to 21 and lower the drinking age to 18.

That way people get experience with the effects of drinking before starting
to drive rather than vice-versa.

They don't want to do anything that might discourage people from
drinking because drinking generates a lot of revenue for the gubmint
and if there's one thing the healthcare debacle has taught us all,
it's that Congresscritters love money literally more than life itself.
Just as long as its somebody else's life, that is.

In Britain pubs can be found in every neighborhood, within walking
distance so drunks can walk home without hurting anyone.  Here in
America the neo-prohibitionists severely restrict the location of bars
with zoning laws, forcing them to locate in commercial districts far
away from residential neighborhoods, and way too far to walk.  And
since America has terrible public transportation, the only way to get
to and from a bar is in a car, presumably with a designated driver.

Drugging and driving, drinking and driving are the same thing. I think
methadone users should not be allowed to have a license. People get
high off of methadone when they take it. I don't want to take a
chance. Marijuana driving is just plain wrong. Crack down on everyone.

So people too drunk to drive can sleep it off in their cars.

Total bollocks.

Addicts on methadone maintenance don't get high off of methadone, they get
"normal".  It's much better for an addict to drive after a maintenance dose
than for an addict to drive while jonesing or in withdrawal.

And studies by the US DOT have found that marijuana-only using drivers do not
have accidents at a higher rate than totally sober drivers.  In fact the rate
was slightly lower for marijuana-only users, but not enough lower to be
statistically significant.

Mixing marijuana with alcohol, however, makes one a worse driver than alcohol
alone.  Alcohol, cell phone and PDA disractions, and sleepiness are probably
the biggest problems for causing accidents.

I agree, and they should test impairment.

Terrible idea, since it doesn't test impairment.  At least the alcohol
breath tests correlate with impairment, so I support those.

I am against being impaired while driving.  As far as drugs -- I think
caffeine is a good idea for driving.  When I lived in Ohio, various groups
would even hand out free coffee to drivers on long trips during holiday
weekends, etc.  Some drugs are good for driving.

Stoned driving is safer than driving with a couple of drinks.  People
who only use cannabis have fewer accidents, as Mr. Zakel has mentioned
before.  The problems come with drinking stoners who have even worse
accident rates.

Got to disagree with the caffeine recommendation Mr.Zakel.
It masks lack of sleep long enough to let the driver get to boring
parts of the trip and then they drop off and provide stats for the CHP.
Remember that driving without lack of sleep is more dangerous than
most drugs.

Right now the problem is mainly people who drive in sleep deprived
states we really need to get them off the road.
