Geoff:
Good job on that. That's a good starting point.
I guess the main issue would be the use of Alexa and Compete only to guage
the rankings. For now, news type sites will get more than normal companies.
And web2.0 or Software as a Service types will get more views than somebody
like Atlassian.
Check this out on Alexa:

One another thing to look at would be Google Rank of these websites. And, as
the above link suggests, add in Google Trends.
Cheers,
Suhit

Hey All,

We have started an Aussie Startup Index on technation:
http://www.technation.com.au/aussie-startup-index/

It's based on similar indices in Seattle & Canada:
- http://www.techvibes.com/blog/category/start-up-index/

The index goes through the companies listed here: http://www.startup-australia.org/startups
and ranks them by the average of the Alexa & Compete rankings.

This metric is far from perfect since, especially since traffic does
not always equal success.

I just wanted to put it out to this group to see if anyone has
suggestions for how to improve the index. (Obviously things that can
be scripted are preferable)

Cheers
