Amen Richard! I graduated nearly 10 years ago now and not once in that
time have I felt compelled to join the ACS. Those who I do know from
the local rank and file are either academics or state govt IT
bureaucrats.

Of course the best way to effect any sort of change on this kind of
organization is to either join and lead a movement for that change
from within, or to set up a valid competitor for the existing
membership dollar.

Neither of these is a small undertaking which is why I guess like many
others I have a tendency to just pretend they don't exist.

I would consider groups like the ACM or IEEE as more representative of
my own professional interests, it's just a pity they don't have a
presence here for political purposes while the ACS has the ear of govt
on ICT in Aus.
