We are looking to find a provider (preferably in sydney) that can
manage Bookkeeping, BAS, PAYG, Accounts Receivable, Account Payable
and basic level financial controller type activities.
Outsourcing this non-core part of our business seems like a no
brainer, do you agree?
Does anyone have any success stories with providers they can recommend
or horror stories to avoid?

The only thing you need to know is that there is a big difference between a
book keeper and an accountant.
Book keepers are simply doing data entry. You don't need an accounting
background, although it does help once you move into accrual accounting. An
accountant however, can give you financial advice and ways of structuring
your finances.
So yes, you are right on - feel free to outsource the book keeping. But
don't over-pay the skill base of a book keeper and don't under-recognise
their limitations.

We have used BeFree (www.befree.com.au) for all of the areas listed
complemented by a local accounting firm (Murchisons) who do our tax
returns and end of year financials.
BeFree uses CPA qualified accountants in India for all of the 'grunt'
work, especially data entry, setting up payroll and bank payments,
etc. Locally they have a CPA who supervises and checks all the output.
We have been using them for more than a year and found it very cost-
effective while the quality and accuracy has been excellent. As with
any book keeping relationship, it takes a little while for them to
understand your specific requirements and you need to do your own
filing and faxing of paper invoices.
They charge around $25 per hour and it ends up being almost half what
we were previously paying a local book keeper.
Murchisons have also been good and much more cost effective and
responsive compared to the big CBD firm we were using previously.

We use Miss Efficiency as bookkeepers, and they are excellent as well
as very cost-effective.
My accountant last year decided we could use her P&L and Balance Sheet
as is.
They're based in Brisbane but it works just as well across the miles.
Sarah Stein, 1300 662 958, sarah at miss efficiency dot com dot au.
I use Robin Greatorex Miller (greatorexmiller[at]gmail.com), a one-
woman bookkeeping business. She handles the books for a number of
small businesses I know and she's prompt, efficient, organised and
relatively geek-friendly - she wants a new MacBook Pro as much as you
do. She does my bookkeeping, BAS, AR & AP and takes care of iTunes
revenue reporting. We run it through go.xero.com and the accountant
also hooks into that - Troy Dobson at cibaccountants.com.au.
