The government is providing some starter funding for a space science
program. $40 million in total awards, as 50% matching funds.
Collaboration between university and industry are specifically
encouraged. Proposals open this August.
We're used to writing these kinds of proposals in the USA (NASA,
DARPA, AFRL etc), but haven't done them here yet. Questions I have
are about matching funds in Australia. Specifically, if they are
providing funding, can we use equivalent contribution as part of our
50%? i.e., sweat equity, IP, etc.? Anyone on this group got
experience with this sort of thing?
Dont know anything about that particular grant but with COMET where
you have to match 20% or 50% you have to show proof of payment ie bank
statements and invoices and they only forward the grant to you in
tranches so you dont get your next tranch until you have spent the
previous one. I imagine yours would be the same.

Dean

I have never applied for COMET funding personally. but everything I
continue to read about the programme leads me to think it's almost
useless for real-world entrepreneurs struggling (with cashflow) to
bring a new product or service to market.
It seems to be just an advisor gravy-train with no real focus on
achieving a commercial outcome.
Is this an unfair assessment? Has anyone had feel-good experiences /
success with the COMET programme in terms of actually accelerating
their business trajectory towards real business outcomes (i.e
revenue / profit / sustainability)?

I worked at a company here in Tas that got COMET funding.
I'm not going to name names, but the adviser we had was more than
happy to tell my employer that his (let's be generous and say)
"optimistic" projections to go from $0 to $60m revenue in 3-5 years
were achievable.
To my eyes, there was very little advice going on, and a lot of
telling the management what they wanted to hear to keep them in a job.
It was like the blind leading the blind...

Thanks all, for the responses. Very interested to see this develop.
To clarify, there's no request for proposals out yet-- that'll happen
in August.
The preliminary docs look far more generous than COMET....but it's not
final. Salary, IP law support, rent, plus a few other things we
wouldn't expect. Not particularly expecting a government handout but
I'll hardly knock it back either.
Cheers
