Thanks for your advice was just a bit annoyed that audi didn't think it
mattered about water getting in it and being so close to christmas it would
be my luck that it would break either when things are shut or when we are
away in jan!!! Also they thought that one week without aids wouldn't
matter!! Will try videoplayer thing kind of wearing at the moment but will

 Hi Erin,

Take the battery out and leave the battery compartment open, and remove the
mould.

Then place the HA and the mould in the front lip of the video player
overnight. Be careful not to let it fall in. Video players are wonderful
dehumidifiers.

I have been doing this for years with mine and my kids HA!

Is there an advocacy agency specific to people who are deaf/hearing impaired? Or does that come under generic disability??

I am looking to go to TTY this is my problem thru the telstra disability equipment service I get LOTS of equipment phones (which I will still need one cause going to superprint and doesn't come with a phone like the uniphone. Dont need really big screen but cant read the standard sized print of uniphone AND the superprint is different colour, also need extension ringer and visual signal alerter now thing is that OPtus will supply only the TTY nothing else for $2.75 a month. Can buy other equipment but will be too expensive. Think optus is its own company now and thats why they are unable to get the other equipment. But their prices are a lot cheaper calls to 13 numbers like the national relay service are included in the plan and we can switch to their internet too. BUT if we have the ph with them we have to have the internet with them as well unless we have wireless currently with bigpond and VERY expensive and they changed their mind about how much they would charge (or someone gave the wrong info when they called us) We could go with telstra for the phone and have a company separate (like ADAM who are Adelaide based) but I was seriously considering going to optus and the man from NRS helping me suggests an advocacy place OR I said just stay with telstra. Dont you all think its rediculous that we dont get a choice of carrier simply because they dont provide the equipment we need to hear the phone/hear on the phone? However I am not sure its worth the fuss???

 Hey!

I know how you feel! I am 29 years old, (from NSW) and am profoundly
deaf - I found it extremely hard to deal with being deaf when I was
younger. So I joined Better Hearing when I was 21, and did some lip-
reading classes with other people with a hearing loss, and tried to
meet other people with a hearing loss.

Hi I have contacted telstra about this but I am wondering if anyone knows what the call cost to 13 numbers is ie the national relay service?? They say all 13 numbers are 30 cents but someone else I spoke with in telstra said 13 numbers are local call 1300 numbers are higher rate. I did specifically ask for the cost of 13 and 1300 numbers. This is because I am looking at going to TTY and calls made thru relay service are 13 numbers even if they are an STD number.

Are any of the accessible cinemas in Adelaide? I have never been to a movie
with captions but most of the advertisements on this list for this are in
Sydney.
Personally I think this increase is terrible but I guess you have to take
anything you can get from them and hope that eventually they will do better.

 Hi Pete,

I've just come off reading your blog, I loved it!!

I tend to take my being HOH a bit too seriously sometimes, so I love that
your able to use humour to describe your experiences but also be honest at
the same time.

Please continue to do what you do, you are an inspiration and I feel it's so

 Gday Peter,

its excellent that you write a blog to document to your experiences.
Please make sure you let us google groupers know about your
experiences when they happen.
Since that SHHH stands for 'Self Help for Hard of Hearing' it can only
help when one hears of other peoples experiences and how they deal

 Hi Peter,

I've just finished reading your blog. I really enjoyed it, and I must
say it's great to come across a deafy with attitude!

Personally I can relate to a lot of what you've been through. I was
born hearing impaired (severe in my case, not profound), got a degree
and worked for large corporations here and overseas. I've now reached

 Hey Scrunch,
I hear you, ....from my own experience...
-Getting a good job with good career prospects has always been pretty hard. I have no doubt that our society has developed a general distaste for ppl with disabilities. The common phrase of "deaf and dumb" that continues to parade the school grounds can only create in the minds of society, even if subconsciously, an inherent lower social status for those of us that are deaf. Having a good job for myself required putting in many extra hours and reading to be up to speed with my collegues. The jobs themselves, I actually have done pretty well at........but as we all know, the game is played in the backrooms. The backstabbing, gossip and basic protecting of ones butt is a verbal game that for a deaf person is impossible to play. I have found myself in situations where I am at fault? without knowing the faultline.

 Hi Pete,

I really like your positive attitude.

It's understood that this kind of thing happens in life but what is
disappointing is that the people that are put in place to ensure these
things don't happen like HR and Unions etc are not always doing their job so
it makes you think what are they there for?

Hi Scrunch, The DDA or Disabilities Discrimination Act is a very strong
document, look it up on internet, you will find that the states and
territories all have agencies to police it. Hi Scrunch
I think that is appalling do you know of the disability advocacy groups in
your state? I have used the one in SA twice in the last 12 months and they
were excellent help not about being deaf but still related to disability
issues.
At least if it ever happens again this may be an option worth pursuing.

I have had the same problem, I work for Area Health Health Service and have
suffered considerable abuse and bullying in the office. My Team Leader did
not support me at all. It was only after this particular person went on to
bully another new member of the office that my matter was taken seriously -

One
method is to launch a DDA complaint against the company, and that makes them
take action, also it raises the issue to a much higher level within the
