I am confused now Andrew has said that other carriers provide special phones elizabeth is saying only telstra do which one is correct????
I did not find telstra particularly helpful in fact I only managed to get the big button one because of hearing solutions. They did not understand why I needed this phone and I find them extremely expensive hence why we got the VOIP service as well as theirs. We wanted to change carriers once the plan of the VOIP phone and the bigpond internet ran out cause its expensive and the phone keeps dropping out apparently due to slow upload speed.
Thanks

Hi Erin,

I am the Consumer Co-chair of the Optus Consumer Liaison Forum, and have
been working for years on improving their disability equipment program, on
behalf of Deafness Forum.

I have a meeting with them today, and will again raise the issue that the
call centre operators don't know about their programs.

They have their own volume control phone and supply TTYs. Most other
products they source from the Telstra DEP.

wow! That is fantastic. So do you think they would get me a big button phone/extension ringer through telstra but I could be an actual optus customer? At least that way I would know that it would work! I hate not hearing especially on the phone cause you cant speech read and people on the other end who dont know me think I am stupid or something!
I reckon it was near the beginning of this year that I asked about a phone from them it was because I thought I couldn't get a phone through them that we got the VOIP instead. The clarity of VOIP through the big button phone is actually not that bad but when it drops out 5 times in one call its frustrating and often people who aren't hearing impaired on the other end complain they cant hear me. Opposite problem to normal

Thanks

Do you know if you are allowed to hire more than one phone from them?? This would be of particular benefit to me because I am in a wheechair and at the moment I only have one phone that I can hear on which like I said is at one end of the house and I keep missing the phone. I can answer on a different phone and call them back explaining that I cant hear but if they are not my friends or I dont know them they do not like or understand this. If I had a big button phone at each end of the house then I wouldn't have to rush around trying to get to it before it runs out.

Can anyone tell me about TTY and how it works?? I was under the impression that you couldn't talk/listen to the person on the other end of the phone and have learnt from another email list that this is not the case. I am having varying amounts of trouble hearing on the big button phone even with the volume turned right up, yet  it seems to depend on who I am talking to as to how well i hear/dont hear. Cant work out why there is so much variation in it. I would be interested to see if the trial with the tone control helps before I work out whether switching to TTY is necessary. Is there a level of hearing impairment you have to have before you are allowed to use TTY or if you are having difficulty with the big button is that enough? I have had a recent hearing test and it showed no change from previous 12 months.

Thanks Erin

Erin,

The TTY is a simple modem that can talk to another modem. so you can call
another TTY and talk direct, or you can call national relay service and they
will call the third party, and they relay officer will type everything the
other party says to you and it will come on your screen, and you type to the
relay officer what you want them to say to the other party.

The feature you have heard about is either VCO (voice carry over) or HCO
(hearing carry over). you need to have a uniphone 1150 to do these.
basically in VCO you call the relay service, and they call the other party
for you. you then talk, and what the other party says comes back as a
display on your uniphone screen. this is easier than using straight TTY as
you can talk, the other person can hear you, but you see their words on your
screen. it is still quite bulky to use, but it works.

the other option as i mentioned previously is to use MSN messenger as a
virtual TTY on your home computer. this can only be done in australia as NRS
is funded by australians (i found this out when i moved overseas, sadly!!)

here's some reading for you :)

http://www.relayservice.com.au/

I have used hearing carry over, and striaght TTY, as well as MSN. they work
well, but take time. I can't hear on the fone at all. well, i can hear but i
can't make sense of it, yet I can do 30-40 consults a day no problems...
weird.

anyways, hope this helps,

Cheers,

Mick

Subject: Re: {SHHH Support Group} Re: phones

i didn't really explain the TTY well... the TTY is just a modem that uses a
phone connection. you can type a conversation to another TTY, and what you
type comes on your screen (a tiny LCD) and on the third party's screen. what
they type comes back on your screen and theirs, both in real time. this is a
great way to communicate if you cant hear or can't talk or both.

then they have the VCO and HCO as i mentioned before.

Thanks for your explanation. I have rung HEaring solutions a place in Adelaide that gives appointment to anyone with a hearing loss so that they can see whether a TTY system would help them. I wasn't told about VCO or HCO just about the standard relay service. With normal TTY you cant listen and read cause there is a delay or thats what I was told. The lady I spoke to Carolyn is real nice and she has a CI and before that for four years she used TTY. I may have to get the dr to fill in a form but because the big button phone is not helping me she reckons that that should be enough to switch to TTY.
Going to ring Engin now and see if they can help me. I want to be able to connect the phones so that when I pick up one down the other end of the house I can transfer the call to the one I can hear on (cause of being in wheelchair)

erin,

one limitation of the TTY is that unless you are called by a TTY you can't
just pick up, and because the VCO system needs an operator to translate the
third party callers words into the text they send you, I don't think you can
receive a call that way, only make them. NRS does have a new service they
are trialling that I have not seen before, maybe contact them for details...

But the third party can call me through the NRS right? Like they ring the 13xxx no and then its relayed in text to the TTY? Thats what I was told by hearing solutions
