Subject: telecoils

Are telecoils a standard program in all hearing aids or do you have to ask specifically for it to be included? Its not for me but for my Aunty. I cannot believe what her audiologist told her about using the phone. They said that she had to place the phone in a particular position and then it would work but actually you need a telecoil in the hearing aid and a phone that works with a telecoil - not all of them do this!

Subject: RE: {SHHH Support Group} telecoils

Hi Erin,

On this subject, if you do have a telecoil in your hearing aid and therefore
require a phone that works with it, does anyone know what the legislation in
Australia stipulates with regard to having phones in public places or
workplaces that must be hearing aid compatible??

I think I may have read something about legislation/requirements of this
kind in the US but don't know if it applies here in Australia.

Thanks,
Scrunch.

MessageI have no idea that is a very good question. I didn't think there was any legislation about it a bit like the set top boxes not having to be compliant to give subtitles!

Subject: Re: {SHHH Support Group} Re: telecoils
i received this response from Widex hearing aids.

"To my knowledge there is not a standard that all hearing aids must be
fitted with a telecoil from a manufacturers point of view.  Some of
the Widex products such as our RIC (receiver in canal)and micro
hearing aids do not have a telecoil due to the physical size of the
hearing aid - it's just not possible to fit a telecoil in.  Apart from
this though in all of our other hearing aids telecoils are generally a
standard program option which can be activated or deactivated by the
clinician.

To import a hearing aid the aid as a medical device into Australia all
hearing aids must pass TGA (therapeutic goods administration)
requirement and standard.

Finally, if you are a OHS client (receive a free hearing aid through
the office of hearing service - government scheme) the aid must be
fitted with a telecoil.  Again it's up to the clinician to activate
this.  They may not do this initially if they want to keep the aid
easy to use.

The client needs to talk to their clinician to make sure that they are
aware that this is an option they would like in their hearing aid."

Hope this helps answer your quetion.

Yep. It answers it so I will make sure Aunty Julie gets the audiologist to
explain and activate the telecoil. Then she will probably have to get a new
phone and learn how to use it. Since I am an OHS (Office hearing services)
client they had to provide me with a telecoil and they did and they
explained what it was for and everything. I really like my audiologist. All
of them at the same clinic are really good. She said she was going to try
and get some info from Hearing Solutions. They were big help for me so I
hope she does. My understanding is that she is getting a BTE aid but she
asked me what size tubing I had and whether the tubing had a part of the
hearing in it. Apparently theres an aid that has part of the aid within the
tubing and the tubing is really thin. I dont know anything about it so I
wasn't sure whether it would help her or not.
Sometimes I think they try and sell you something for the $ not because it
will be of use to you....
