Subject: hearing loops

Hi everyone
I was wondering how expensive a hearing loop for a meeting room is? My friend is involved in & I am looking to be involved in a group that combines disability and arts and there is someone in the group who is deaf. They are looking at getting the group incorporated so they can apply for funding for this sort of thing but I told my friend that I thought hearing loops were very expensive. Its in a room at Arts SA. I haven't seen the room so I dont know how big it is or anything.

Hi Erin,

There is a company known as Printacall which I know who do hearing
loops. Contact at www.printacall.com.au and sa...@printacall.com.au
for more details and firm quotes.

They said a guide of $7000 - $12000 depending on how many microphones
are needed, and the size and construction of the room.  Keep in mind
this is an estimate. As no 2 jobs are the same.

There are a lot more factors that need to be considered such as size
of room, amplification, materials, concealment, PA/Audio systems hook
up options etc.
Some places have interferences (think metals in construction materials
etc) that can affect quality of loop systems. i am sure there's alot
more factors that i cannot think of that Printacall can assist you
with.

But here's some info to assist with your knowledge on hearing/
induction loops

WA Governement Guide to Hearing Loops:

Deafness Forum Hearing Loops Brochure:
http://www.deafnessforum.org.au/pdf/1036%20DF%20Hearing%20Loop.pdf

Wikipedia:

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for this information I will pass it onto the person who was
interested. I thought it would be quite expensive and I was right!! I dont
think my friend would have expected it to cost that much and I have my
doubts as to whether they would install a hearing loop just for one meeting
once a month, it would probably depend on whether where it was put and
whether it would help more than just our group.

I hope I didn't put my aunt off buying aids altogether. I tried to explain
to her what a t-switch was and how helpful it was (despite her audi not
mentioning it) I feel as if her audi has given her false hope. Hearing aids
are wonderful but they are not a miracle they do not cure hearing loss and I
still miss a heck of a lot especially if the person is not facing me if I am
using my mobile phone even with the attachment I have if I watch TV without
an fm system or are in a group or where there is background noise. I do lip
read but sometimes its not always possible too. She probably will hear a lot
better than she would without the aids but I hope she doesn't expect to hear
everything cause I really doubt that happens for anyone. I feel sorry for
her. I went through this. You know she doesn't think she would even use a
t-switch but I have used aids for 2 years and I would personally be lost
without it. Even if she doesn't have any ALDs it would still help her at the
cinema or at service counters and many other places. One day her hearing
loss might be bad enough or she might be able to and wnant to purchase an FM
system or proper system for the TV and a t-switch would help her then too.
She just thinks but I will hear much better with just the aids. Maybe she
will but I dont and I am just going on my experience. Her hearing loss is
that she hears about 50% in both ears but I think she told me that its
mostly in the speech frequencies. Its hard to explain this technology to
her.

Hi Erin,

While on the subject of t-switch do you find that when you put it on that
setting you get a hissing sound?

I get this on mine and I don't know if that's normal.

If I'm using them at the cinema it's not too bad, cause the sound of the
movie overrides the hissing sound, but I find on the telephone the hissing
sound is distracting.

Also, you've made an important point here, my family used to think that if I
got hearing aids all would be solved.  It's important to remind people that
hearing aids are not a cure for hearing loss and although they do help
immensely you could be letting yourself down if you go in thinking that
there won't be limitations.

Good luck to your aunt.  I know what a confusing time she must be going
through.

As you know, persistence with hearing aids is the key!

Scrunch.

My hearing aids are set up differently so that the microphone setting (which
for me is the cross part it takes the sound from my bad ear to my good one)
and the t-switch are in the same program I have not had any hissing sound.
It doesn't seem normal to me but ask your audi they should know and I hope
you sort it out cause t-switches are very useful.

One problem I have had is that I have a t-link for my mobile phone and the
induction plate that sits behind the aid is so small that keeps falling off
my ear when its in the right place it usually works ok but that doesn't
happen very easily. Does anyone else have this problem?

Is that the same sound like when you go through the entrance point to shops
that have the thing that beeps if you try and steal something?? I thought
that was the hearing aid itself it happens for like up to a couple of metres
past the entrance to door of the shop (if that makes sense). It also happens
under certain types of lights I think they are called down lights. They have
them at the hairdressers they are annoying the sound is so loud that I cant
hear over the top of it!!! Someone told me that the frequency of the lights
and the hearing aids is the same and so it makes the noise or something like
that. I am not sure exactly!!! Does that happen to other people cause its
annoying.

Christian, re loops! SHHH did publish a list of companies who installed
loops a number of years ago, Peter Kerley (Deafness Technologies)was one of
the companies. The National Acoustic laboratory has publication  "User and
Installation Notes on Audio Frequency Loop Systems for use with Hearing
Aids" by G.B. Gore. I have edition revised January 1988. I did from this
book successfully install a loop in The Anglican Church of St. George in
Hurstville, it has been modified since but the original system still works
today.  SHHH did at one time have audio induction loops for hire, I did on
one occasion help install a temporary set up, and later dismantle it. The
SHHH Group that operated in Hurstville did have portable loop which was run
out for every meeting. Unfortunately most of the people who were associated
with SHHHH at that time have fallen off the perch. Denis McDonald

Subject: RE: {SHHH Support Group} Re: hearing loops
Hi Erin,
I'm a volunteer at SHHH who is hard of hearing and use my T switch every
day.  I sometimes find that "hissing sound" happens when I go to another
part of the house when I don't turn off the T.  That sound is interference
from some other electrical things such as florescent lights or dimmers.  In
my case I think it is the type of radio alarm clock that my husband uses.
The best way to find out if it is interference is to try several different
loops.  If the hissing sound persists it may be that your aids need to be
serviced as the T switch is faulty.
There are several places that install or sell loop systems.  SHHH has been
recommending "Word of mouth" based in Victoria who sell a wide range of loop
systems for both home and public buildings.
Cheers,
Jan
