Subject: Buying hearing aids and using another service provider
Just had a recent enquiry.

Has anyone ever bought a pair of hearing aids, maybe even second hand
and used another audiologist clinic to provide moulds, and adjustments
to the hearing aid to suit your hearing and provided servicing?

Has anyone had trouble with their warranty because they took their
hearing aids to a different service provider to get it fixed etc?

I know many audiologists want you to buy from them and come back to
them for testing and servicing etc. But does anyone do otherwise?

It's similar to buying a car from one place, getting your fuel from
another place and using a different mechanic everytime you need a
service.

Let us know how you went. Anything to look out for? any benefits?

im an audiologist and i encourge you to put a submission to the senate
enquiry they need to hear the issues for you not just the big
corporate players. the eharign aids are sold generally as apackage of
test , fit and support, they anticipate some time of support? a year
many years. the technology is now advancing faster then ever before so
that the technology is dated before the product wears outand i believe
packaging for many years is unreasonable as old people may never take
advantage of what they pay for, young people may have "adventures"
well before the life of the product or simply the device is no longer
ideal...
neverless we all hate a person coming in with an internet purchase
which often is cheaper than i can buy through my suplier wholesale as
a small player  but the problem is that often the product is not best
suited to the clients loss or needs and that where things become
difficult. some manufacturers are now saying they will not support
warrantly of overseas  internet purchased products which are often
priced to suit the economy of the market they are sold in.

Thanks very much moriac. This confirms my experience today - I rang one
audiologist and called in to see another and realise that the system(albeit
for good reasons) is  something of a cartel! It simply isn't  worth my while
buying the much cheaper hearing aids from the internet because the
arrangement with the audiologist is for a "job lot".

I was told at one place that of (say) a $4000 total charge the actual cost
of the aid to the audiologist was relatively small. The bulk being take up
by the"package" you mention. So I could buy the aids cheaply but still face
most of the bill and not have the benefit of my health fund contribution and
(perhaps) the warranty.

I also take the point that the actual aid may not be the best one for my
situation and that is the expertise I would be paying for.

It does seem a bit steep though!! Surely I can find an audiologist who will
do the hearing test and recommend appropriate aids which I can source from
the cheapest supplier and then have someone program it correctly (I could
probably do that if the software was available on the internet!!)

I'm something of a newbie having had one aid for about eight years and now
looking for replacements. What are the details of the Senate committee - I
am a great believer in people power!!
