Subject: hearing aids

My aunty is looking into getting aids. She is not a pensioner. Do you know if places that sell aids give a trial period and if so can you return aids after a period if they dont work or are not the right thing?

Your Aunt really needs to see an audiologist. I think by law
audiologists have to give a trial period of up to 4 weeks? I've always
gotten a trial period of that long when I get new hearing aids.

I go to Northern Sydney Hearing and Paxton Barrand Hearing, though
they are both Sydney-based (I am not sure where your Aunt is):

Good luck

We are both in Adelaide. She DID see an audiologist thats why I was so
annoyed because they didn't give her the correct info about the telephone
and she told me that once she paid she couldn't return the aids only upgrade
to a different model. I was trying to find out what the laws were because I
am on a hearing services voucher and so I think the rules are a bit
different. Also my audi was so good but in the city and my hearing loss is
different to my aunts and so there was only 2 types of aids I could have (1
aid in my good ear or a bicros aid which has a microphone on one side and a
normal aid on the other. The sound is transferred and amplified.)
Thanks for your help. I hope Julie works it out.

Hi Erin, and all others who seek to find an Audiologist,

Do visit the Audiological Society of Australia - the professional
Association for audiologists in Australia

Website:   http://www.audiology.asn.au/

and click on Consumer Information to find audiologists that are
members with the association.

The audiology society has a code of ethics and works to uphold the
industry and ensure its members meet the criteria when becoming
members i.e. qualifications etc.

I have cc'd them into and hopefully they can give some insight into
what to look for when seeking an Audiologist.

Thanks for the website. The one she went to is listed but I think its hard
when you know nothing about hearing aids and have a very limited budget to
work out what to get and whats not useful...
I have some knowledge but because my hearing loss is different to hers and
because I was on the hearing services voucher (I had the option to upgrade
top up or whatever its called) but I dont think theres much more they can do
to a bicros aid and the one I have works really really well.

I was under the impression that all aids had a telecoil but am not sure.
Julie doesn't like the idea of having aids but only has 50% hearing in both
ears which is not a lot... she had a pair of aids from 10-15 years ago and
never went back to the audi to get them properly sorted and they are
analogue out of date and didn't have a telecoil. Technology has improved so
much and I am hoping that she will find aids that help her and that she will
become like me Unable to live without them and I cant even feel that they
are in my ear I have to check sometimes!
Thanks for the website.
Erin

Subject: Re: {SHHH Support Group} Re: hearing aids
I just talked to my aunty and discovered that the audiologist is now telling
her there is a period where she can get her money back before she was told
the only option was to "upgrade the model" I think she is under the
impression that the more features and more automated the hearing aid the
better it is and I dont necessarily think this is the case. What do others
think? Since I have a bicros aid there is not that many options I can have
it is different to having two normal hearing aids and this is what my aunt
keeps saying but generally and from I have heard from other HA uses you dont
necessarily need all the features. She was also told that the tubing in BTE
HA lasts between 1-3 years and I am sure that mine was changed after 6
months! She was told again that she wouldn't need the t-switch for the
telephone but that it was inbuilt into the HA and that she could use the
button to activate it. I mean the info that Christian got said that the
program had to be activated by the clinician which I am assuming is the
audiologist. I just want my aunt to have a simple easy to use HA that is
suitable for her hearing loss. I am worried that she is expecting it to fix
everything but she has had them in the past a long time ago so I guess she
does know a bit about them. She is discovering that you have to shop around
there were two places selling the same model with the same features $600
difference in price!!! Why aren't there controls on this sort of thing?? It
makes it really hard for the consumer to know what to buy and where etc. I
have told her to look at the SHHH website at the info sheets (She cant use a
PC but my uncle can) so he will be able to get the info off the website!!!
Theres one about telecoils. I cant believe what her audi told her about the
phone I CANT hear on the phone sometimes even with the aid the volume
control on the phone and the t-switch!!! If I use a different phone I am
stuffed!!
Sorry that is my rant for today
Erin

Subject: RE: {SHHH Support Group} Re: hearing aids
Hi Erin,
Yes you are correct in that you don't need to get the top of the line aids.
I understand that there is a new aid on the market that automatically turns
on the T switch when you use the phone.  My aids came with a battery to
place on the receiver of the phone which turned on the T when using it,
however I got very frustrated with this as if I moved my head even the
slightest the T would turn on and off so it made listening very difficult.
If the audiologist has told your Aunt that she only has to turn on the T at
a switch on the aid then it has been programmed.  I find that I don't want
all the programs that reduce background noise, as even though it does this,
you then have difficulty hearing anyone speaking. Your Aunt should
definitely have a trial period.  At SHHH we have found that many of the
elderly clients who have come to see us are disappointed with what they have
been supplied and are unable to get a refund.
Hope this is helpful to be able to advise your aunt.
Cheers,
Jan

Subject: Re: {SHHH Support Group} Re: hearing aids
This is very helpful. Did I say in another email that the first time she
went to the audi she told her that she could only upgrade then she was told
differently that she would be able to get her money back?? Its crazy. She
told my aunt she wouldn't need a t-switch that it wouldn't be useful and
then when I told her more she went back and asked again and I think she said
the audi told her something about pressing a button. I mean I think they
should explain how these things work and how they are useful
I dont have a program that reduces background noise. I am intending to buy
and FM system which has a directional and superdirectional and
omnidirectional settings so that depending on the situation you can change
the setting. This way the person whos wearing the mic will be picked up and
at the same time it also reduces the background noise. I cannot live without
an FM system. I have done it before and it was awful.
Dont you think that they try and sell all these features that dont
necesarilly help you??? Its annoying but I think my aunt is on the right
track now trying to gain as much info as possible before deciding which one
to get. I dont want her to be disappointed with what shes got either. I hope
she finds a better audi!!
Erin
