Jane Brody on Tuesday had an article in NY Times on why dental
implants are better than bridges.
I wrote a letter to Jane.
Dear Jane,
I would like to comment on your article about a dental shift. There
are a number of problems with your article. There are no prospective
studies that say implants are better than bridges between teeth.

Re: Temporary filling casuing pain, should I be concerned?

You're right--it's hard to tell what is going on. However, leaving an
endodontically-treated tooth without a permanent restoration as long as
you have is fraught with potential problems. It is possible that the
root canal system could be re-infected during the time the tooth is
cracked and exposed. It is also possible to have a root fracture.

 Hello all,
Obviously I appreciate that it is very hard to offer any kind of
guidance over the internet, so I shall try and ask purely for
hypothetical possibilities. My brief history:
2 years ago I had an abscess in my upper-right 2nd premolar. My
dentist prescribed antibiotics, filled in my root canals and then

None don't ever get a root canal, it is the very worse treatment you
can get. Damge to your whole body. Better to have the tooth pulled.

I'm not a dentist, or any kind of medical person. Don't even
have a current CPR card. That said.....
My limited understanding of dentistry. If you leave a bad
tooth in, it's more likely to damage the other teeth.
Collect nasty infections, etc. Infections which spread. I
think you have the "pull one, and the others go bad" mindset

It may be as involved as a bridge or an implant. Of course, there now
is a powerful disincentive to do a fixed bridge on intact abutments.
IMO the implant option should be given consideration. Certainly the
dentist shouldn't be deciding the implant option on the basis of
expense--this is something to be discussed with the patient.

Any advice over the internet is going to lack the advantage of
viewing the case in real life, but....
Most of us (the dentists on smd) seem to agree that retreating
a retreated root canal is quite likely to remain a failure.
IOW's I would recommend extraction *almost* every time this
question comes up in my practice.
