No I haven't..... I'll try to make it more clear for you.
Google could edit out the SPAM but keep the rest of the good posts in the archive. It does no good to keep _everything_ including spam in the archive. That makes it more difficult to find the good information. Mark

It seems to me "Spam" only works if it's really, really easy on the sending end. In order to be effective, the spam must be essentially free & effortless to send.
If you can attach a monetary or time penalty to the sending of spam, you will stop it dead in its tracks. The spammers will not invest either to get the job done.
With S.E.D., other than moderating it, I wonder if there are some obstacles that could be thrown up that to that end?

Quite simply, we so far have had no way to put the relative executives toes to the fire.

So you use hamster to do the filtering that Agent cannot? I am getting interested but i am *nix centric.

All this crap is posted from China addresses. Need to do an IP address lookup and eliminate stuff from [Google and China]. Better to do a DOS attack on the offenders web server with machines in China. I'm sure, for a price, the Russian spammers can do this sort of attack.

If you look up the IP address of most of those Chinese spammers, they are squatting on unassigned IP addresses.

Yes, Agent has pretty good filtering options, including regular expressions, but it will only filter on the From and Subject header lines. Using Hamster or another "local newsserver" like NFilter, exposes the other header lines so Path and Message-ID can be used by Hamster to score the message.

Then quit and get a real news provider, and a real newsreader.
For providers try this search string "usenet providers". A few even offer "free" access. Though at US$2.95 a month, cost is a minor issue for most of the regulars here.
And likewise "usenet newsreader" for your newsreader selection. Many of these are free as well. Even Agent is inexpensive.

Note: The Gecko guys have promised the ability to filter on ANY header field in the next major release of Thunderbird (IceDove)/SeaMonkey (IceApe), due 1Q2008--so they recognize the need. (Hey, they still have 15 days to meet the schedule.)

Undocumented in Agent: Agent will filter on newsgroups, but you have to manually type in, for example...

Got one that allows me to access my news (and history of what I've read etc) from any browser on any machine? I switched to Google groups from a "real" reader for a reason, it has some real advantages.

So why has the forger quit trying to impersonate Jim Thompson?

As far as i know, none of the universal access, general or free providers prevents you from dealing with any of the several USENET news providers. The other Internet service providers (ISP) or may not provide USENET news themselves.

Only thing that seems to work is for each of us to use the tools imbedded in our programmes. to select the offending posts and generate rules for each and every newsgroup and mail group that we monitor or use. It is a Royal PIA but filters our the trash. Sad there are so many illiterate people that use what was at one time a useful tool for dumping their garbage into. IMHO! FWIW.

I filter for "nude", "teen", "sex", "dick", and a few other choice terms in the subject line - also "cheap" and "wholesale" which are usually spam as well.
I use Pan newsreader, which has a really great filter thingie. :-)

I eliminate anything with Path:*googlegroups*, but prefaced by a white-list (NewsProxy/nfilter).
