my friends and myself came from a trek in the mountains with 100s of pictures on 4 different cameras. Is there a (free?) software to pull out the date stamps from the JPEGs and sort them by time accordingly?

Assuming that you are using Windows: pixvue allows you to add the exif date in the detail view, you can then sort the list according to that. http://www.pixvue.com/

Assuming that all 4 cameras had the correct date and time set, the photos already have a date and time stamp. If you have a friend with a Mac, iPhoto will automatically sort the pictures by date and time. It also has the capability to take any picture(s) with the incorrect date and/or time and change them in batch mode to a new date and time. If there are more than one, it will add one minute to each one starting with the one with the earliest serial number. I routinely use 2 or 3 cameras and use this feature all the time. Sometimes when I change camera batteries, the date and time reset to the default value. Until I discover this these photos have the incorrect settings. I use the batch change feature to correct this.

Won't work unless you synchronized the camera's clocks.

One of many options is to use jhead to change the filenames to be chronological, then other programs will go through them in filename order. It can also rotate photos according to the orientation sensor.
jhead -autorot -nf%y%m%d%H%M%S *

I use the excellent (and free) Pixfer from http://www.glasslantern.com/ to copy and rename the files from the camera or card. Renaming is very flexible including of course data and time. It has other advantages too, best try it and see what you think.
I rename to a format that prepends the filename with the EXIF date/time so "IMG01234.JPG" would become something like "060904-100350-IMG01234.JPG", which is automatically sortable by filename. As a side effect it also resolves the potential problem of duplicate filenames.
It will copy (or move) files on the PC as well as from cards, so you can use it to reorganose those you've already copied from the camera(s).
Thank you all! We did synchronize the clocks, and even if we didn't based on the first several pictures, can't I re-asjust the time stamps?
I've never heard of the orientation sensor. Can anyone tell me more about it? Is it a standard feature on all cameras? the oldest camera is ~4 years old (Canon powershot S50). The other 3 cameras are more recent, and are in the same price range.
I will also check is Python has a module for reading timestamps from JPEGs, then I could write a simple script to sort and rename all files.

If you want to write a script you can do no better than to use Exiftool (Google for it). It's a Perl script/library that can do everything you want and then some.
Amongst other things it can alter timestamps including the ability to apply fixed offsets to a whole series of images taken with a wrong camera clock setting.

IrfanView will let you do a batch rename using any available EXIF fields. You could set a pattern that includes the camera make/model, date/time shot, owner's name, or whatever else suits your purposes.

Hello,
"File Date Changer 1.61" is a small, freeware program that does just as its name implies. "Free Downloads Center" <http://www.freedownloadscenter.com> has it available:
