While we are at it: what's the relevance/meaning of - |GG| - |AX| - |UM| I've been using Usenet for over 20 years, but have never run into any of those except in this NG.

It can be a lot of fun. You still have time to submit your "Road Less Travelled" pix.

I don't recall ever seeing any of those. Could they be something that your newsreader adds? [GG] might be Google Groups.

Nope, definitely not coming from my side.
Some sample subject headers: - "Re: |GG| Nikon D40 or Canon XT or ?" by Paul Furman - "Re: |GG| Is nothing sacred? :)" by Paul Furman, John A, and Rich - "Re: |AX| Re: Olympus EP-1 focussing may doom it for DSLR users" by Paul Furman - "Re: |AX| Re: Make video with 40d" by Paul Furman - "Re: |UM| [SI] "Filters" is up, please take a look!" by Paul Furman
Actually I'm starting to see a pattern here. They seem to originate from Paul, maybe he can enlighten us?

I believe Paul has a filter on his news reader or server that automatically adds those prefixes at his end if the articles come from Google Groups (GG), and I assume the AX and UM are something similar. So if he replies to an article that was sent from GG, that will appear in his subject header.

Yes, sorry, I try to remember to delete that in the header when I reply but often forget. |UM| is usenetmonster which had a spate of spam but they cleared it up nicely, I just removed that one, |AX| is the name-changing P&S troll's newsreader, the only way I can filter him with my current setup. |GG| is google groups. There is so much garbage in these groups, the filters help a lot to get to the interesting posts, I just have it set up to mark them as read & tag them with a color, not delete them. Newsproxy adds the |XX| in the title so thunderbird can filter on that, since t-bird can't filter on header details.
