I just purchased Sunpak PZ42X for Canon and it doesn't seem to work with Canon SX10 IS. The flash does not fire when used in TTL mode. Manual mode does work, but then I would need to adjust flash power manually based on distance to an object. Could somebody confirm that dedicated Sunpak does not work in TTL mode with SX10 IS?
What other dedicated flash would work well with SX10 IS? I need swivel and bounce features. I have an option to go with Canon 430EX flash, but I would like to save on a "dedicated" from other manufacturer. Thank you.
I like fill flash for my flower pictures in direct sun and do that in Program mode rather than Auto. I highly recommend this combination.

Yes. It works with the SX10 IS in the following modes: E TTL, Manual (Full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64)
My PZ40X C2 uses all the automatic features on my SX10 IS including focus flash for the zoom setting. Make sure you have the Canon model. They also have Nikon and Sony compatible models.
€ Flash Control Mode: Canon E-TTL II € Guide number of 130 (ISO 100/feet) @ 80mm € Auto focus assist for low light shooting up to 16 feet € Bounce flash head with five positions € LCD display and easy-to-use controls € Seven manual power ratios selections € Automatic and manual zoom head settings € Powered by 2 AA batteries € Autofocus assist light € Weight: 7.1 ounces (without batteries)

Steve, I got another PZ42X flash to try with my camera - I thought maybe the first flash was faulty. Results are exactly the same as first time - PZ42X does not work with SX10 IS in TTL mode. Manual mode works with all power settings and it does read flash zoom setting from the camera. However, in TTL mode the flash does not fire properly. It actually does produce the tiny flash - so weak that it is rather a blink, not a flash. You have to look directly at the bulb to notice this tiny blink - it is weaker than a Christmas tree light and cannot even qualify as a flash. It's weird that PZ40X does work with SX10 IS, but PZ42X does not. It doesn't look like I have other options other than returning the second PZ42X and sticking to Canon 430EX flash. Regards.

The PZ40X only has the E TTL mode and the manual modes. I have no idea what the difference between TTL and E TTL is. In fact it is more properly Canon E-TTL II. Maybe TTL is a generic mode. E TTL works with Auto and Program on my SX10 IS. Those are the modes I have done all my flash photography in.
I have now taken over 10,000 photos with the SX10. Some times when I want to do fill flash I have to use Program mode rather than Auto mode.

Even though the flash is barely firing, are the images otherwise properly exposed or are they underexposed? If underexposed, then perhaps the flash thinks that it isn't needed. What shooting mode are you using for the SX10? P, Tv, Av, M, Auto or any of the SCN or Image Zone settings?
