Diluted D-76 & Imporved D-76 at dilution

Is it possible that my home brewed, 'improved,' no hydroquinone D-76
would be less active at 1:3 dilution than standard, out of the box
D-76? Although my home made D-76 compares favorably with store bought
D-76, results at 1:3 seem underdeveloped.

black and white inks for making digital negatives/prints?

I know it's possible to purchase "B&W" inks comprised of black with shades
of gray to replace the Cc,M,Y, cartridges in my old Epson 1270, but I don't
know where to buy inks with a good reputation for this purpose.
Any advice appreciated.

The red oak image needs help:

In both images, one part of the grain soaked up the emulsion and showed less
of the exposed image there, but the oak has more of the porous grain to soak
