I think Robert Plant was trying and failing to imitate Roky Erickson. Janis
was trying and failing to imitate Aretha Franklin. So was Steve Marriott,
who Robert Plant was probably also trying to imitate.

VERY recent memory. "Those Oldies but Goodies Remind Me Of You" came out in
1961. At the time, something that had come out a couple of years earlier
was considered an oldie. That was still true as recently as the Seventies.

Certainly it is - because the phrase "pop music" itself is ambiguous.
Since it actually is used to apply to almost anything which is "popular"
(gaining a good degree of attention on the radio, on the charts, etc.
for example), and is used to designate such wildly disparate things as
