Have been investigating this file format since hearing of the USB release. First I attempted to find software to convert wavs to flac. First converted wav files to 24 bit. Discovered that even though Winamp 5.33 is supposed to be able to play flac, it didn't work when I tried it. Media Player or Media Player Classic don't play it, Creative Mediasource doesn't play it. I found a 1.6 mb exe of VUPlayer that does play them okay.
Flac seems promising, you can shrink wav files by about 50% or more with no loss of data, would be good if more devices used it.
24bit wavs are almost twice the size of 16bit ones, but no new data is added (in the ones I made), so I'm not sure how to asses them otherwise, unless they turn out to be a lot bigger because of actual extra data.
Flac 24 bit files come in an at under the size of 16 bit wavs, so still don't see what 16gb is for. The mini-documentaries could be around 3gb. So that leaves 13gb for mp3s and flac. Guessing mp3s would be around 1gb or a bit more, so it still leaves around 12 gb.
So expect the new flacs to be significantly larger than the ones I made myself because the extra data that is meant to be there, but waiting if I can find out.

24-bit WAV files play just fine for me in Winamp, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, iTunes, Quicktime, Foobar2000, and VLC Media Player. This is on both my Windows XP and Vista computers.
I heard that the USB drive set is being packaged with it's own player on the drive.

I had no trouble with 24-bit wav files. I'm looking for information on this, I wondered if it had a player.

Well, I don't know. The last winamp I downloaded was about a year ago, and I had to install the plug-in to play FLAC. Maybe the built-in plug-in isn't as good?

Sorry, I accidently left out the results of second part of my test last night... Of all the players I mentioned above, Winamp, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, Foobar2000, and VLC Media Player, play all flavors of FLAC files. Winamp and WMP require extra plugins, which are available on the 'net. Foobar, MPC, and VLC play them right out of the box.
iTunes and Quicktime won't play them. I guess we can thank Apple for that.
I head that the included player is a Flash thingie. Can't remember where I read all this, though. It makes sense, since I've seen similar players included with some Enchanced CDs.
> Not with the later ones. They are already there.
Version 5.3 needed a 3rd-party plugin (which was installed when you installed the FLAC program.) It seems that the newest couple of Winamp releases include the FLAC plugin. I just installed the most recent Winamp, ver 5.56, and it plays both 16- and 24- bit FLAC files, as did my previous older version from 2007, 5.50.

Flac it's a great audio format. When I download cds i try to find them in flac. When the mp3 came out the internet was much slower and the hard disks were smaller and expensive, but all that have changed. The bad thing about flac is that it is not supported by mp3 players, dvd players, etc, but if you use your computer to listen to music, there's no problem.

KMPlayer is the solution for playing FLAC sound files, as least it was for me.

I tried installing plugins from the site as well. I was doing so much I couldn't do any more to try to solve it. I'll reinstall or get a later version. My present winamp might be damaged.

How do you get the Media Players to play flac? I have the latest Windows Media Player as far as I know, version 11. The information I meant also included the USB release of The Beatles.
Got anything in that magic bag for SHN files? I got a FLAC player and one that will play SHN too. The problem is, the one that handles the SHNs is an editing/splicing program and will only play one tune at a time. And it will not convert to like-quality formats (like FLAC). Only to the lossys.

I've never used SHN files myself, but maybe you can use this:

i have winamp 5.01, i had to download all the plugins for several audio and video formats like flac, shn, ape, wv, flv. and they are all working, never had a problem with it.

Okay thanks. I found in a search how to get it flac to work with Windows Media Player, on a forum. I've also upgraded Creative Mediasource Player which now does play flac files, but it gets stuttery with the 24-bit ones I made, 16-bit ones are no problem.
