Some dwarf throws a potion at you while the umbrella is wielded in your off-hand then the umbrella will take the brunt! Downside is no more cheap identification of potions.
If it's a potion of acid then there's a chance the umbrella will be destroyed.
Umbrellas would also be awesome tools while exploring dungeons as a way to protect one's rustables which haven't been fooproofed yet.
Should the player forget to x the weapon out, leaving the umbrella as the primary weapon, and the character is female then it would simply scare off the beaten monster rather than cause damage.
Male characters would do minimal damage making it perfect for making Vlad a challenge!

And an open umbrella will make it possible to float down through a hole without receiving damage or being stoned by a wielded cockatrice corpse. Next proposal will be a granny class and an umbrella as quest artifact.

(I suppose this is a Mary Poppins reference? Anyway..)
Then it would be possible to two-weapon that spoon with the weapon of choice, the mythical deadly tin-opener! Far too powerful for any nanny.

Yes. It just so happens that just a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down in a most delightful way.
We shouldn't (or perhaps maybe we should) forget that engraving 'Supercalifragilistic' (correctly) should have some positive effect. Perhaps it could be used against @'s in a way similar to ? oScareMonster since that's how it was used in the movie IIRC.

If you're standing on it, then a Nurse won't hit you, but instead hands you potions of healing?

Don't forget she had a BoH (in the movie, at least).
