So, I just escaped from a very harrowing trip into Gehennom.(Fighting two demon princes, three high level liches, and their hordes of monsters at the same time = not my idea of a party.)
I am at my stash now, but with my cursed lev ring on I can't reach it or the altar. After fighting all those liches, almost everything I have is cursed (including my worn amulet and two rings, and all my food - so hunger is quickly becoming a problem.) However, my luckstone is still blessed so my luck should still be high. I did have to pray fairly recently to fill my stomach, so I'm waiting for the timeout to go down. What's the best strategy here to guarantee I get the ring off? Should I wait as long as possible (ie, until weak or fainting) and hope both major problems are cured? Or should I try to pray before hunger reaches a major problem?
Another question: Since liches are being such a pain, and there's no chance of me genociding them (illiterate game and no more thrones exist) I'd like to make use of the Book of the Dead. Can the BoD be read by an illiterate character outside of the invocation ritual without breaking conduct?

The most obvious way to remove the ring of levitation other than uncursing it is to find a sink, and levitate over it. Note, this will hurt a little.
Magic traps are another option (5% chance of uncursing).
If you don't have any sinks left, you can explode the ring, if you have a source of lightning. Note, this may explode any and all other rings and wands in inventory (other than wands of lightning and rings of shock resistance), so be prepared to drop all zappable items you don't want blown up.
From a prayer standpoint, you are probably safest waiting until nearly fainting, eat some cursed food until you are only hungry, then pray, while wielding some of of your cursed food. If cursed levitation is your only(major) problem, it should be fixed if your god is not unhappy. You MAY get a benefit by levitating over the altar while praying, but I don't remember if this is true or not.

... and your alignment record is positive.

As far as I can see, you will get the usual "benefits" from being on an altar when levitating over it. Note however for someone with maxed out luck and high alignment record this includes crowning. If you ensure your luck is 9 or lower, you cannot be crowned.
Note however this is for 3.3.1; I believe there have been some changes since then. You could also try http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Prayer where the relevant sections have allegedly been updated for 3.4.3.

Try floating over a sink. Make sure you're not wielding a cockatrice corpse.

Thanks, guys. I prayed at weak, and got not just the ring, but every worn item uncursed, my stomach filled, and a golden glow. I don't know how lucky that was but I'm going to be super pious for a while. Now I just have to get geared up before braving Gehennom again.

That is a new one for me - I'll have to keep that in mind for a similar situation. There were no sinks generated in this game, which also makes ring ID a little tricky.
