What do disenchanters, cockatrices, mind flayers, and stupidity have in common? They all led to my samurai's untimely end, very close to the bottom of the dungeon. With -36 AC, two-weaponing a +7 Frost Brand and a +2 katana, wearing gray dragon scale mail, speed boots, and gauntlets of dexterity, along with an amulet of reflection, =oWarning and =oTeleport Control. All intrinsics possible from corpses, other than TC. Also I've got a black dragon mount. This is the chain of events leading to my death, which occurred outside the lowest level of the Wizard's Tower.
Event 1: Disenchanter These guys are an annoyance. Have to take off my weapon and gloves to fight them. I've got an MC of 3 so they usually don't get through to my armor though. Punch to death, Frost Brand back on, #twoweapon.
Event 2: Cockatrice At this point in the game, I just roll through these guys. They can't get a stoning attack off before I kill them.
Event 3: Mind Flayer I don't even have grease on my helmet, so I tried to approach the MF cautiously and kill it from range. Lacking infravision, I put a towel on my head and use telepathy to see it. I'm shooting ya at it and backing away, and I realize it's catching up to me while I'm riding the dragon, so I dismount and try to regain some distance when I see "Do you want your items identified?" At first I thought it killed me with a brain suck, which would have been impressive since I was at 17 Int. But then it dawned on me... I'd stumbled blindly over the cockatrice corpse and I'd forgotten to put my gloves back on.

They're one of the main reasons why I'll try to have an attack spell or two, even as a fighter class. Otherwise... you've certainly seen enough arrow traps before now, in order to be able to spare a few.

I just switch to my pickaxe. (Or re-enchant my weapon if it gets too low. My recent Valk ascention [#1 woohoo] I had to re-enchant Excalibur twice up to +7 before I genocided them on my way up the dungeon)

How about wielding a unicorn horn? Or a food ration? Or anything, really.

IIRC, it's been a while, but I do not think it would have mattered if your gloves were on or not. Blindly, with or without gloves, walking over a cockatrice corpse causes insta-stoning. If you are levitating then you are okay, though.

With gloves touching trice corpses is ok even if blind. solidsnail
