Subject: easy artifact creation (prob. long)
I have an idea for an artifact weapon for chaotics. Silver spear called
Queequeg that does extra damage against ; and confers water walking.
Silver is useful later in the game, I don't like ; because of my YASDs
and water walking because it's useful like levitation but not as hax and
more themely with the nautical nature of the weapon.

Thing is that I've been trying to think of a way to make acquiring the
artifact as simple as dipping a longsword into a fountain at XL5. Of
course Queequeg would be in the queue for sacrifcing but I'm trying to
think of an alternate method.

Sacrificing on a chaotic altar, while chaotic, while wielding a normal
spear and piety is good at level 5?

A general store in Minetown will be guaranteed to have a cursed Queequeg
in stock but available for an exorbitant and feasible only after Ludios
price. Sure it'd be easy to get holy water, dip it and get a pet to steal
it? As for selling it back, the shopkeeper would be uninterested
preventing players from generating awful amounts of gold.

Wielding a normal spear at XL5, hitting - and attacking towards a sink?
There'd be a chance that the spear would become stuck in the sink's drain
rendering the sink unusable? If successful there'd me a message of "From
hell's heart I stab at thee!"

The Oracle offers a chaotic character a quest to recover a luckstone, a
silver spear and a potion of gain level. Upon returning to the Oracle she
forges Queequeg giving it to the player. In this case I'd probably say
Queequeg would act as a luckstone or would that make it unbalanced? The
latter two items would still be randomly generated or one would have to
polypile or alchemy wish for them.

Would anyone be inclined to make other suggestions?

Also I think that dipping a chaotic, unfooproofed artifact into holy
water should bless the item but cause corrosion. Holy water always burns
like acid when imbibed by chaotics. Same goes for lawful artifacts being
dipped in unholy water.

Finally just for fun

By the way, I chose a spear because IMHO there are too many swords in the
game. There's swords and then there's sorcery but the preponderance of
edged weapons is ridiculous.

So it encourages you to suicide against eels? Evil.

Well I wanted it to have some balance. Also Ahab was suicidal when facing
his nemesis too.

It doesn't have balance. If you can prevent or survive being eeled into
water, you can beat an eel to death with anything; if you can't, it's an
incitement to suicide.

What it _doesn't_ have is a use. Admittedly, that's not unusual, in
artifact weapons in vanilla.

How about a lich killer? Same percentages as Vorpal Blade uses to decapitate.

Or, if you are looking for a spear which would have a use in Nethack, I suggest
introducing a different artifact spear:
Amenonuhoko--a crystal spear
Unbreakable
when invoked turns swamp into dryland for 3d3 squares nearest. (useful function for obtaining the
Amulet)
when wielded allows water walking
usual double damages
