THE United States has slapped a ban on Vegemite, outraging Australian expatriates there.
The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals. Expatriates say that enforcement of the ban has been stepped up recently and is ruining lifelong traditions of having Vegemite on toast for breakfast.
Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, Canada, said he was stunned when searched while crossing the US border recently.
"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said.
"I was flabbergasted." Paul Watkins, who owns a store called About Australia in San Antonio, Texas, said he had been forced to stop importing Vegemite six months ago.
"We have completely stopped bringing it in," he said.
"(US authorities) have made a stance and there is nothing that can be done about it."

My curiosity got the better of me back in the early 80's, when Men at Work were all the rage. Only so many times you can hear "Down Under" and its line about being given a "Vegemite sandwich" before you have to get a taste. Luckily, curiosity didn't kill the cat, but it came close. I think engine grease would've been a better choice.

And what I mean by the end is near...is that unless something changes, the lucancy will continue and there will be no hope for any of us who love the place that America used to be and that our fathers and grandfathers fought for on the fileds of Europe and what the marines are dying for now in Iraq...Freedom.
Just add it to the list of idiotic things this administration is responsible for creating.
1) The recent law regarding online poker in order to secure the US borders
2) Starting a war, invading a country but forgetting to secure the enemies ammo dumps
3) Preventing all liquids from being carried on airplanes, such as baby formula, medicines and the like.
4) Allowing a major oil company to close a profitable oil refinery in California the same year that gasoline shoots up to $4 a gallon.
5) Allowing the government of Iraq to 'lose' $1.2 billiion given by the USA to the new Iraqi government to outfit its military.
6) and on and on and on...
This guy is just a moron.
I now know why more and more respected people come out everyday saying what a buffoon this guy is.
Just remember that is you criticize the administration even over something like this, there are plenty of his followers out there that will hound you as being un-American and say that by questioning the ban on vegemite, you are asking the troops to "cut and run"
What's next? Will they ban the use of salt on Watermellon? If they can determine that folate is only good on breads and cereals, what is keeping them from saying that you can't put salt on Watermellon?
I never in a million years would have expected to see the US restricting online poker rather than securing our borders. I never would have expected them to ban a spent yeast paste. The US has lost so much respect in the rest of the world, this only adds fuel to the fire.
Rome is burning and you have convinced yourself the smoke and fire is just a hazy evening.

the republicans, especially in the SW states, as well as private organizations have been trying to get he border secure ... and they get nothing but criticized by the democrats for it. meanwhile, well known democrat leaders have fucking marched in the si se pueda marchers, promised illegal aliens driver's licenses, voting rights, and the shirt of YOUR back.
There isn't a single reasonable argument FOR allowing online gambling given the inherent holes that would exist in security/integrity of online gambling sites.
1.) the law's amendment wasn't about national security
2.) bush didn't start a war, and bush wasn't the man on the ground telling troops to secure/not secure the ammo dumps.
3.) mixing liquids to make an explosive devise was a real and present threat and a terrorist would just as soon put explosives in a baby's body cavity as disguise explosive liquid in baby's bottle
4.) bush doesn't dictate what companies do with their business. meanwhile the left has blocked any and all attempts to open more refineries in the US for a very very long time
5.) how did bush personally allow the iraqi government to lose 1.2 billion? do you think he personally called them up and suggested they just hide it in their sock drawer?
the facts completely escape you. yer the one who might want to consider waking up. the people we are at war with don't follow any rules, they have no government that has to answer for their actions, and they want nothing more than to kill you and anyone else who doesn't follow their warped idea of islam ... are you suggesting we just leave them alone and play nice nice isolationists?

bush starting the war would have equalled bush flying a plane to iraq and crashing it into the middle of their cities, just like we didn't start a war with germany. now, care to address my other points?

Al Queda didn't come from Iraq. Have you been asleep for the last 4 years?
-- "He just said it had an 'x'." "It isn't their necks I mind," said Piglet earnestly. "It's their teeth."

I find it ironic that folate is only good in bread and cereals in our country, yet Vegemite contains folate, and Vegemite is commonly eaten ON bread. Apparently, adding it on later doesn't count.
