Last nite i wandered thru the hood to the 24 hr store to get a Tedeschi's crumbcake and orange circus Peanuts and rolling tobacco.
I have to say that Tedeschi's store name brand products are far and away better than anything else around.
On the way in, a guy offers to sell a cigarette to me. It's a menthol so i say that if i have change i will.
So i buy my stuff and head out the door. As i'm buying the cig he thanks me and says he was trying to raise money for a sammich. I wish him well and off i go. 50 feet later i decide to go back and buy him some food.
He wants Ham and cheese and i get one. I mention to the clerk whats happenin and clerk tells me that the guy is just going thru hard times.
At first i honestly thought he wanted wine or a 40.
Morals are, people are hurting, i feel good to help the guy AND Things are not always what they appear.
Libs, I challenge you to feed a stranger directly and not tax me so you have a job feeding them.

I just give 'em the money so they can buy booze if that's what they'd rather have.

I did give him the money also.
Since he didnt have enough to eat, i figured i'd take care of the complete need.
All i had left was a debit card so food was doable.

We give the streetcorner bums money after church just about every Sunday, and I usually give them money during the work week downtown, although downtown OKC does not have that many panhandlers. They say, "say, man, can you gimme sumthin' I can hold?" I never heard that before and don't know what it really means, but that's what they say.
I'm with you on the not caring what they do with the money. Like the Clint Eastwood character in the book/movie about the death row guy always did, "Take this. And please don't spend any of it on food."

One Christmas I felt all Christmassy when I gave two bums outside the deli twenty dollars. Six months later they were still there and becoming a real problem, I didn't feel safe going to the store any more.
Best to give your money to a real charity, to benifit the needy and not bums who figure begging is easier than working.

Sumthing i can hold means what it actually says
They want to hold it ( and keep it )

Well, i will give someone all the money for food and some of the buzz money.
I personally would rather keep the guy alive more than buying hm booze.
Still, i dont care that much what he does with it as he has none and spending some on anything will help.

You are positively correct. And that is why you should be giving your money to real charities. A real charity will help those who are unemployable. If a person is unemployable, then they aren't able to stand on a corner begging. A charity can teach unemployable people to find a job. Goodwill.org will make your money go alot further then a bum.
Giva a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish... and he's going to be a liar.

The way I heard that was "and then he will bore you for years" but the idea is the same.
The best thing I ever gave a homeless person was a pretty good sleeping bag I had used when I was homeless for a few months in 1975. That bag and my .45 kept me warm and safe. I gave the sleeping bag to this guy in 1979 and I saw him every few months for a couple of years. Then I saw him at a bus stop in West Haven, pretty far from downtown New Haven where he had always hung out. And he was dressed neatly and had a shave. So I got off the bus I was on and crossed the street to talk to him. Before I reached him, he said "I passed it on, brother, I passed it on." He didn't need it anymore. He had a job and apartment.
And he passed it on.
I doubt that it is still useful. Even a high-quality bag, which it was, shouldn't last all these years of fairly frequent use. But it makes me feel good to think about it.

Am I the only one who thought this story would end with Igotskillz finding a way to welsh on the homeless guy?
