Can't bus to the polls or breakfast.

No sooner than the Yankees leave town, SEPTA (in Philly) has gone on
strike as of 3:00am.

No buses, subway or trolleys. regional rail still rolls.

I don't remember this happening in my years here, not that it matters to
me.

I've got SEPTA on the radio scanner to hear if anyone's talking over the
air. Silent!

In this recession the BUMS!!!!!! want MORE money and benefits, not
improving service in any way.

Who do they think they are? GM? Commuter Hell!!!

Hey Andy:
Where do you live in Philly? I've been in Florida since '97
I can get Tasty family packs, But no pies, no juniors.
And I can't get lunch roll at any of the deli's. I'd love to
have some ice cold lunch roll. I can get Taylor's Pork Roll
at certain stores....We do have a sandwich joint that makes
good Philly cheese steaks. They have Amarosa rolls flown in...
Keep in touch, Ron

I'm in Media, PA, "Everyone's Home Town."

No trolley on State St. today. How depressing. Media is the only city in
the country left to have a trolley running down "main" street.

We have a fairly decent pick of varying cuisines.

What we DON'T have is Early Bird Specials! <G>

Amoroso is the surefire hoagie and cheesesteak roll favorite.

When I commuted by train into center city, the train passed an Amoroso
factory and for a few brief seconds the smell of fresh baking rolls
filled the train! Made the whole trip worth the price of admission.

Nilla wafers tho......

I've been in the Philly environs since 1979 and I can remember SEPTA doing
the strike thingy....I'm outsideof Allentown now and I'm waiting for LANTA
(Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Agency) to declare they want to go on
strike as well....the only problem there is that LANTA is so limited and so
unreliable no one would notice if they did.

Just heard it on the news.  The union wants an 11% increase.  Both the
governor and the mayor are up in arms saying with all the businesses closing
and people out of work they should be grateful they have a job.  Increases
in wages was offered and I don't believe that any benefits were asked for in
give backs, but the sticking point is that 11%.  The natives are restless
and not taking too kindly to having to look for alternatives.....one woman
was going on how if they were treated so bad, quit and let her have the job
since she is unemployed.

dejablues,

Thanks for the Conshohocken Italian Bakery fyi. I'll have to drive over.

A "First Place' bakery with a great selection. I do wonder what sets a
hoagie roll and a steak roll apart.

And probably best to get there for the 7:00am opening time freshness,
like the bagel shop in town.

Best,

Andy

My goodness!  This is a bad time to strike for higher wages, that's
for sure.  I can think of lots of  reasonable reasons, but not a wage
increase.

Thanks

sf,

The 11% increase extends over a five year period. I forget the correct
breakdown.

This morning, according to the talking heads, a few of the strike force
are blocking some still working suburban buses from traveling.

Last night, I don't know if it's true or not (no official quote), that
the union is prepared to strike for as long as it takes to have their
demands met. Again, a TV news claim, not verified!

Best,

Andy

Thats the group activated entitlement mentality at work. In their minds
they simply are entitled to more and more no matter what. We have the

labor union in the state. All you hear is whining about how tough their
jobs are and guaranteed every time their contracts are up they will strike.

Most state workers don't get huge raises yearly and they often get
nothing.  You won't get rich, but it's steady work.  You don't have to
worry about being laid off, you have good vacation & health benefits
and the retirement is good.  Unfortunately, people tend to forget why
they chose government work over private after a while.

A job is a job, but any job in any sector where you have to deal with
the public, short or tall, is a tough one.

Speaking of walking to the polls, I know a young woman who walked six city
blocks on crutches to the polls after seeing news coverage of elections in
countries where "purple-thumbed people walked miles to cast their votes".

People who can exercise their right to vote, and don't, shold be ashamed of
themselves.

Felice,

The fact that the SEPTA transport workers union went on strike after the
Yankees/Phillies world series game at 3am but didn't stay on the job for
election day that very same day had some wondering if they weren't trying
to "railroad" (bad pun) the elections.

I don't commute via SEPTA so I don't know how to protest the union's
strike action.

I certainly feel for the countless hundreds of thousands who pay to get
from here to there and back. :(

Best,

Andy
