I just started examining the forks more closely and there's somthing loose
rattleing about inside - I guess a bit of detatched rust. Does this ring any
alarm bells with anyone ? The forks have two holes drilled in each leg, one
at the top and one at the bottom, on the inside - for ventilation ? The one

I have a very long rack, the panniers are mounted as far back as I get get
them (Otherwise my feet catch them) But the hooks are far apart. I reckon
most of the weight sits on the axles.
It's the same rear wheel, built by me and very tight. Are you saying that
the stiffness could transmit shock to the frame ? This is why I use big

The wheels use wide 622 rims. I don't think them exceptional from
normality in any way. Adding a brake rotor detracts from appearance
generally, the typical purchaser would likely have a conservative
attitude. Adding a brake rotor is adding another item for failure
reducing the MTBF.

 <snip>
<snip>
It's a very strange brown colour. If I was being unkind I'd call it
muddy puddle brown, a bit kinder would be 'tea' brown. However, it
has met with universal approval and even I, an aesthetic ludite, find
the colour very pleasing. The picks don't quite do it justice as the
lacquer/gloss it what takes it from 'ughh' to 'nice!'.

The sort of people who can contemplate buying a Utopia Kranich will
tell you how it will outlast ten cheaper bikes. That's true, of
course, but, for fear of being called elitists, they're not telling
you the real reason they bought it, which is refinement. (The same
applies to people who own Bentleys.) My dealer told me that most

I'm not so sure. Scott-Matthauser pads had a greater tendency to melt
under extreme loads than Kool Stop Salmon pads. Whether this was due
to the greater thickness of the Scott pads or the aluminum backing
cast into the Kool Stop pads is unclear, but it might be a simple
matter of differences between their otherwise similar compounds.

Disc rotors are far less durable than rims, in terms of mean hours/
miles before failure. They seem like they should be as undemanding as
the disc rotors on my motorcycle, but in practice it becomes clear
they find any excuse to warp or bend.
Drums would be the best choice for longevity, cleanliness, and low

Rudge-Whitworth were the largest manufacturer of tension wheels in
England. They were the development of the Coventry Machinists Company
of who built the Aerial wheel designed by Starley, THE high wheel
maker. See other posting about Times newspaper reference.

The Maguras make perfect sense for a city going bike. Fragile bike
brake rotors easily get warped and banged up in town. With the Maguras
you get that luxe feel of hydro with a very large rotor that's not
warping or overheating. ;-)
Wouldn't be my 1st choice with linear pull brakes being cheap, mature,

Just read Andre's .PDF on his Kranich - which seems tb built for
durability/long wear.
Given that rim brakes eventually wear out the wheel; given that
Kranich's wheels are special items; and given that even
mechanical discs give sufficient power/modulation - my uninformed
reaction is that the bike would be more durable with disc brakes.
