Subject: Athena 11, Centaur 10 FD 28.6 mm seat tube questions
Do these modern (2009) Campy FDs, accept older 28.6 mm clamps
(cannibalized from a 5-10 year old Daytona, Veloce or Mirage FD)?  If
so, are the FD bodies the same and it doesn't matter whether I order a
braze on or a 32 mm clamp on style?

Unfortunately no. Starting in 2008, all Campagnolo front derailleurs
are permanently attached to the clamp(31.8 and 34.9 only. I guess
Campagnolo doesn't think steel frames exist) or the brazeon tab. Get a
brazeon and then an aftermarket or Campagnolo clamp(again, only in
31.8 or 34.9). Problem solvers is the nes I use for 28.6mm.

I should add that an older Campagnolo FD will work fine with 11s,
actually, any FD will work since Campagnolo is once again, a
ratcheting feriction LH shifter.

Thanks Peter.  I read your response to mean that I can use a 2005
Centaur 10 speed FD with my 2000 Daytona 28.6 clamp with a 2009 Athena
front shifter and CT crank?

Yessir, no problem. We have a demo bicycle with a 10s Record CT crank,
about a 2006 FD(for double, not CT), 2009 Chorus 11s levers/chain,
works just fine.

I'll just throw in my experience that if you cut up a plastic patch
kit box, the two long sides together are just about the perfect
height, length and thickness to make a 28.6->31.8 shim. The material
is flexible to bend around the tube, but is not compressible, so it
doesn't squish. I know Campy specs a longer BB for triples with OS
seat tubes, and this is basically making it a 32mm seat tube, but I've
had no problems hitting the small ring of a triple on my PX-10, which
has such a shim, even with a 110mm BB.
