Actually, most (perhaps all) cities contain small stores as well as large
stores.  It is a matter of which stores you choose to go to.

It certainly is true that my city contains a lot of small stores.

For example, it contains convenience stores, where you can buy some
food at times when the supermarkets are closed.

It contains small second-hand bookstores. In fact, it even contains a
couple of small *new* bookstores, even though they are outnumbered by
the big chain stores.

There are small clothing stores - but they sell expensive designer
clothes. Although there's sort of a middling-sized discount store
that's halfway between a convenience store and a supermarket, but also
sells clothing.

Ha. There's another one. Remember when supermarkets closed at nights
and on Sundays? Ok, not EVERY store is open all night, but lots and
lots of them are. If I need something at night, I can run to the store
if I so choose.
