I have taken a look at the report of the USPSTF on Mammography and I have listened to a lengthy NPR interview with one of the scientists making the report. I don't know who appointed this independent panel or when, but the analysis seems like a standard Republican cost-benefit analysis. "What rate of death is acceptable?" The... more »

SOT: Pops - redux
I just finished watching Bones. Booth's father was on the episode tonight and he looked mighty darn familiar to me. Yep, click, click, click. A couple of years ago, Gibbs' father showed up on a NCIS episode and it was the same man, the gifted actor Ralph Waite, who makes a great father figure.... more »

Furst's Kingdom of Shadows and Current Events
Having just finished this novel which explores fascist, Nazi and communist sentiments in Central Europe before WWII, especially those in Hungary, I sat down to read the current issue of The Economist and came across this article on present-day fascism in Hungary and other European countries. I like it: Joan Senior Health Care Solution So you're a senior citizen and the government says no health care for you, what do you do? Our plan gives anyone 65 years or older a gun and 4 bullets. To die. In the rain. Alone.
These words "To die. In the rain. Alone." are apocryphally attributed to Hemingway in a bit of recent humor in which various people from Plato to Stalin respond to the question "Why did the chicken cross the road?" But recent it is, probably within the last decade or so. So, when I read in Alan Furst's *The Kingdom of Shadows*... more »

The corpse as major character
I've just finished a book in which chapters on the corpse's life that lead to her death are interleaved with the current events in the lives of the people involved in unraveling what happened. Flashbacks are of course a common way of telling us the back story, but I don't remember having read books before where the flashbacks are... more »
