  I&#39;m in the middle of The Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures, &lt;br&gt; edited by Mike Ashley. Really enjoying it; all the authors have kept to &lt;br&gt; the general tone &amp;amp; style of Conan Doyle (though I think I found Jeremy &lt;br&gt; Brett&#39;s interpretation of Holmes creeping into one of the stories). &lt;br&gt; Next up... still debating, but probably Small Favor by Jim Butcher.

  I renewed my acquaintence with this 1947 adaptation of Raymond &lt;br&gt; Chandler&#39;s novel recently. I liked it a lot but many didn&#39;t. Just as &lt;br&gt; Chandler&#39;s novel was told in the first person the movie tried to do &lt;br&gt; the same with a subjective camera - the camera because the protagonist &lt;br&gt; - the only time we see Marlowe (Robert Montgomery who also directed)

Parker&#39;s book rarely rise to the word-count of a novella any &lt;br&gt; more, they&#39;re more like long short stories with a lot of white space. &lt;br&gt; Which is why I always get his books from the library.   A quick visit to our only local independent bookseller and there was a &lt;br&gt; Indridason on the shelf! A good read ahead! &lt;br&gt; HYPOTHERMIA is the title. A sure sign that Indridason is doing well &lt;br&gt; is the publisher. Canadian rights have been picked up by Random House &lt;br&gt; Canada, so the US publications are a thing of the past here.

The main similarity with Mankell, though, is &lt;br&gt; that Martin Beck is a little rumpled and has a cold and isn&#39;t heroic. &lt;br&gt; There&#39;s a lot of low-key humor in the books and very little in the way &lt;br&gt; of high drama.
