Just discovered that the AMC network has remade (Patrick McGoohan's) iconic 'The Prisoner' into a 3 night- six hour series and it airs on Nov 15, 15, and 17. http://www.amctv.com/originals/the-prisoner/.
Stars are Jim Caviezel as Number Six and Sir Ian McKellan as Number Two. We're not in Portmerion anymore! -- but it's a marvelous-looking production, even in the Namibian desert village setting. Check out the videos. It looks very fine indeed...
Recently my husband's been recording from tv and copying to disc the original episodes of The Prisoner with Patrick McGoohan.. The first six episodes are here on video for free viewing http://www.amctv.com/originals/the-prisoner-1960s-series/

I'm looking forward to this. The original show was classic, with McGoohan. So existential. The preview I've sen with Caviezel and McKellen looks like it could be very good. --
Prisoner No 6 is a former spy who quit his job, but he can not be killed, so he is sent to some kind of super maxim prison, why, we really would like to know? In the remake Prisoner no 6 gets a girlfriend/lover/mistress from the very first episode, again we have to ask why?

Well, in the case of the original, McGoohan had just finished up the very successful spy series _Danger Man_ aka _Secret Agent_, whose last episode did end with McGoohan's character resigning from the spy business. At that point there was a huge wrap party, with various people besides cast and crew invited, and one of these was an actual important official from some UKian intelligence group. "So," McGoohan asked the official, "what does a spy do once he resigns?" "Well, said the other, "we couldn't just let him wander around loose; he knows too much. Usually we'd find him a nice place in the country where he can enjoy his retirement without the risk of meeting anyone who would try to get hold of what he knows."
{Expletive deleted]," McGoohan thought, and that's where _The Prisoner came from.
The little I've seen on the new series seems to indicate that it involves aliens and brainwashing, and Ian McKellen playing (no doubt very efficiently) such a thoroughgoing creep that I don't want to see any more of him than I already have. So I don't plan to watch it. On the other hand, I have the entire _Prisoner_ on DVD. Maybe it's time I watched it again.

Why indeed. Why did the remake of _The Time Machine_ had to begin with the premise that the Traveler wanted to save his girlfriend from being killed? What was wrong with the desire to explore the future?
I have a DVD of the George Pal version too. And it includes a short scene in which George returns, quite middle-aged now, to 1900 and runs into Filby, also middle-aged. IIRC the actors (who hadn't seen each other since the film wrapped) just fell back into their characters and improvised.

I believe the friend of the Rod Taylor character was the guy who cme to fame playing opposite the hore on Mr. Ed. It was a series I much liked as a kid and one my parents approcved of as being non violent with clean comdey suitable for kids, Take care -- Stanley L.
