What is the male equivalent of bitch? It has to be an insulting word as bitch is. It can't be something as innocuous as assertive or aggressive, or can it.
John McCain had no trouble laughing when he was asked the question at a rally . . . How do we beat the bitch. He laughed. He laughed! And I imagine many of the women, if not all in the crowd, laughed along with him. When women accept the use of bitch so easily it becomes the word of choice for aggressive or assertive women, or simply any woman you disagree with. I would propose a ban on the word, but what would I then call Ann Coulter?

Before the recent intensification of the use of the word Bitch, I had always thought that Bastard was the male equivalent. But Bitch has taken on a new set of connotations (or several sets of them) in the last five or ten years. And I agree with you that it is galloping alongside Strident as a way of denigrating women.
As to what to do, first I think that it should be recognized that overuse of the word reflects a paucity of language skills by its users. It is up to those of us with such skills to find more interesting and varied descriptions to meet our occulter needs, maybe courtesan of the conservative coven, My mind jumps to that wonderful monologue in Act 1 of Cyrano de Bergerac where he skewers his opponent for his lack of linguistic imagination. (I always liked the Jose Ferrer version best.)

Bastard, usually. Including the sometimes use of "bitch" to mean "female bastard."

I guess that means it works? Not that I would ever describe you in such a way, of course! <G>

I'd say that "bastard" is the equivalent, and I will further note that I am sick and tired of the word "strident" applied to Hillary by fellow Democrats.
