I got a copy of the newest Rankin novel, The Complaints, which isn't yet available in the US. Now that I'm done with it, I thought I'd make it available on eBay. Starting bid: $5.00 (hardcover -- not a first printing).

Thanks, Bev.. (although I won't be bidding since I already own it. ;-) Nice review. When I read The Complaints, the one thing that seemed to be missing was the wry, ironic, dark humor that was always present in the Rebus series. That little edginess always made the series special for me. I liked this book well enough, but it didn't thrill. So I am still hoping for the return of Siobhan and (fingers crossed) the retired Rebus, perhaps working cold cases....

Agreed...I'm finishing it up now and yes, writing's fine and yes, lots going on but...no soul or something. I don't know, but I didn't love it. And something rattled me right from the beginning - he seemed to quickly set up Fox as the straight and narrow internal guy - and then *immediately* had him breaking just about every rule and I wondered what way he was supposed to be...eh. Now that Rebus is retired I'm very happy with Thorne, though. As long as Billingham keeps writing I won't worry about the future Rankins. ;-)
