Ran across this article today and tried it out at Google. It's not perfect by any means but might be useful, especially in larger cities for finding your way about on foot.

Except that if you ask, Google will tell you how to swim from Boston to London.
Sometimes the instructions aren't entirely connected to reality and might ask you to walk places where walking isn't possible. -- -- Lymaree

Ooh, it's wonderful! Car, foot, public transport! It does public transport better and faster than the bus company's website does. Thank you!

You're welcome, but double check that results.. I've gotten some very roundabout (and misleading) directions from it too. Sometimes it's right on, othertimes. it's not.

That's true of all of them! I think it was Yahoo! that told me a particular address wasn't two miles west, it was three or four miles east. And the local bus company told me to go five miles north- northeast, I had to go six or seven miles west, and then change buses to go north and then east, taking a couple hours to do so.

The driving instructions are also a bit out of touch with reality.
Ellenville, NY is allegedly an hour and forty minutes from Manhattan. That is, if there's no traffic congestion, bad weather, road construction, etc.
The route goes over mountains; small ones, but they have interesting hairpin turns. It goes through what may be the most traffic-congested part of New Jersey....

When Denver International Airport first opened in 1993 (I think that was the year) Mapquest's instructions for leaving the parking lot included a turn which, if you took it (and plowed through a barricade) would have had you out on one of the runways.
It's always wise to keep common sense very close at hand when following computerized directions for walking or driving.
Although I did check Google's walking instructions for leaving the office where I used to work and heading towards Coors Field, and was pleased to note that Google had a more direct route than the one I would have taken if I were going to make that jaunt without consulting Google first.
