I just added another priority post test that explores the idea of
making the events and resources a priority post by solving the two
issues we had with it which were that you couldn't get an index and
that the older messages appeared first. I'm not sure if it would do

When a group organising an activity has used gg for the steps to get a name for their activity, identified some jobs, put them into order and given them a timeframe, the calendar might be the place to go.

If they went there at that point they would add jobs to the calendar.

Further thoughts on gg issues below -

I am happy to keep working on this idea to see how far we can get, but I am getting more concerned about the complexity it involves.

It might be better if we were to pull back a bit from the ambition that it could be a 'solution', and instead see it just as a possible supplement, and optional extra to a more basic, less complex and more accessible system for organising which would be the first port of call. (a bit like the potential that the calendar MAY turn out to be)

a. In most cases an activity would not require great organising and in many cases people would be put off doing anything by too much detail and effort required.

I checked it out - I think there is potential in it. I was going to try to follow the instructions to set up a GG 'activity group' so I can see where the holes are but I am guessing you are doing that right now. If so could I recommend that the dummy activity you set up could be something we should take on - eg planting a fruit tree or something.

It's been so long since I looked at this that I'd forgotten just how far we actually got with it.

It's good to revisit it now to refresh ourselves on where we need to get to with technology - but as you say, we are stuck with whatever gg can do for the moment.

I hope that, starting from basic functions, we can see how far gg can go in serving our needs and continue to identify where the cut off point is for gg.

Actually the problem with linking to the new space is that all the
events postings and the other discussion postings are on the old gg.
We could either restore the old gg or add the postings to the new one.
Both would require an hour or two. I'll also have to repost some stuff

1. I have to join too many groups (I think it could be reduced to two)
2. In Whats On it would be better to provide some layout for posting a new event - without a uniform layout, badly named posts, inconsistent layouts and insufficient info could make the space annoying. I know there is a tension between this and visual simplicity - I don't know where the line should be drawn.

By way of explanation (not justification), rightly or wrongly I have been feeling somewhat alone in doing much on this for a while.

I did not want to put any pressure on you as I don't really know what is occupying your time now ... what's going on in your academic or personal life. In the past when I don't hear much from you, my default assumption has been that I understand 'family' is demanding and must be your top priority which could occupy head and body for long periods of time. I avoid even asking you about this when it has happened for fear of putting pressure on you.

because, while the can be reversed, the previous setup has now been
changed. I would not have agreed to many of the changes you have made
because in my opinion many of them don't work.

Another prob with gg is that is was 3 forums (fora). I think I have reduced it to 2 without losing anything. In fact I think it is better.

I have simplified things in some other ways too and have added the calendar (just as a potential aid, not as a requirement).

The village site looks like it may be a better bet - having a forum index and categories is a great benefit. What I did in gg was to use pages to achieve 'categories' - you create a page and comment on that page ... your comment becomes a posting.

The village page does the same (uses the same tech feature, but instead of just listing 'pages' it lists those pages in categories and gives an index (same thing, better organisation).
