Recommended Breast Pumps

Mariann <mariw...@yahoo.com>

Hi -

I'm currently expecting my first child in November and I'm planning to
breastfeed as much as possible.  Unfortunately, I have to go back to
work sometime in January so I'm looking into various breast pumps so I
can express milk while I'm at work.

Here are the pertinent details --

-- I am currently the sole income in the family while my husband
finishes graduate school so staying at home is not an option.  My job
is approximately 30 minutes away from the day care center where my
infant will be going; this center is owned and managed by my mother
and breastfeeding infants are encouraged in the infant room.  I
typically work Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.  I am able to
telecommute from home twice a month.

-- My family has one car and my husband will be taking it with him to
go to graduate school.  After bringing me to work, he will be dropping
off and picking up our infant since the center is en route to his
campus.  I anticipate having the car once or twice a week, depending
on his school schedule during that and subsequent semesters, but due
to the commuting time involved, I do not anticipate visiting during my
traditional 30-minute lunch break.

-- I plan on nursing and expressing milk for as long as I'm able to
produce enough to nourish my child or until such a time as s/he no
longer needs or wants it.  I have a private office and flexible time
during the day for pumping when scheduled or needed.  We're not sure
if we will have more children in later years at this time.

-- I'm currently on an HMO health plan until the end of 2000 and don't
anticipate any assistance from the state program for the purchase or
lease of a breast pump.  However, I do plan to switch over to a POS
health plan for January 2001; I don't know yet if they will cover a
breast pump two months after the baby's birth.

So, given all these details, what breast pumps are recommended in
general?  Are there any reliable breast pumps available for under
$200?   Medela PIS or Ameda Purely Yours?

Thanks!
