What level are you riding on? Go to the maximum effort level, 12 or
20 depending upon the model. When I trained for the panams, I did
intervals on those bikes using 19 as the sprint effort level. Your
heart rate should go ballistic. I used to do hill sprint intervals on
a real bike, 6% grade and my maximum rate achieved was 39 beats in 10

People like to focus on heart rate because it's easy to measure, but
that doesn't necessarily make it useful. I think there's a lot more
individual variation than the standard guidelines allow for. For
example, I've always had a very fast heart rate -- I can never get my
resting pulse much below 60 -- but it's never been a problem for me.
