Sure.  All it takes is hot peanut oil and a mandolin to makes the thin
slices.  They'll taste great, but the process is very time consuming
and fattening.

Can you use a guitar instead of a mandolin?

Don't and don't fry anything in the house either.  The oil vapors get
deposited on everything and you will never get the smell of developing
rancid oil out of your carpets, curtains and much else.  Tacky oil
deposits pick up a lot of lint too.

i used a potato peeler to make the slices.  but i agree that it's time
consuming and the chips are usually gone by the time you finish.

Obviously not quite what you asked for, but I gave up potato chips in
favour of popcorn.

I have a hot air popper and pop up some popcorn if I have a craving for
chips. I lightly season them if I wish. Can even add oil / butter.

I find it just as good, and I don't feel sick after eating a bowl full,
unlike chips.

There's a farmer's market in Gilbertsville, PA called Zern's where they
make homemade potato chips. All they do is slice the potatoes thin and
dump them in a vat of hot peanut oil for a couple of minutes, then they
remove them from the oil and lightly salt them. Those chips are amazing!

Try using sweet potatoes or even parsnips, they taste great. Just don't
overcook em.

does using an electric fryer help

or a coleman gas burner..
someone told me that fresh potatoes cut.. and if the oil is hot.. will
absorb less oil...

but still much more than the commerical ones
