I have also encountered this problem, which has occurred sparodically for the 
past two years. On occasion, I will achieve connection and be able to 
download the(at that point sizeable) set of upgrades and security updates 
available. Upon running the command script you gave the previous poster, the 
first command- ending Automatic Update- could not be completed, but all other 
commands were successful. Similarly, I have not yet been able to install IE7 
because it also gets stuck at the "installing files" screen. In looking at 
other posted solutions for connection problems, I have discovered that I 
inexplicably cannot locate the Windows Update folder anywhere on my hard 
drive. It's becoming both perplexing and more than a little infuriating.
