Subject: Can't fix BITS - Windows Update
Code: WindowsUpdate_80246008 WindowsUpdate_dt000

OS: Windows Vista

Recently, I came to open my computer to find that Windows Vista had found
updates. When I go to install them, it says it cannot download because there
was a problem. When I look in the help section, it tells me to make sure that
BITS is started. I start BITS and retry to download the updates, but I come
back with the same problem and I go and look in the services section, and it
says that BITS has stopped itself.

Is there anything I can do to fix this issue, or would a fresh install of
Vista (or a system restore) do the trick? Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for the help.

The Bits Repair Tool says that no repair is needed currently, and when I go
to the support link, it says "An unknown application error occurred. Please
try again in a few minutes."

Thanks for that post.

It solved my problem. What did the trick was the 2nd factor - I had a
corrupt Windows Update temporary folder.

Thanks again!

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities).  HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert.  **Post your log to
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Click the Start orb
In the Start Search field type in
services.msc
Under Programs, click on services.msc
The UAC prompt will appear. Enter the password then click the Continue
button
Is the Background Intelligent Transfer service listed ?
Make sure that it's Startup type is set to Manual and it's not Disabled.

If yes, click the Start the service link.
Did it Start ?
If it was already running, click the Restart the service link.
Did it restart ?

IF BITS is not listed, download the Fixit from here:

How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Save MicrosoftFixit50502.msi
When the download completes configure Vista to clean boot:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows
Vista or in Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Do Step 1: Perform a clean boot
When the system has been restarted to a clean boot state, with the
system connected to the internet, run  MicrosoftFixit50502.msi and
choose the Aggressive mode.
Once it's finished, restart the system.

UNdo the clean boot steps, restart.
See if the system can download and install updates now.
