I've got the same problem, and I never install something I can't check first. (I know it is only the windows defender update, but it is a matter of principles :P)
Here's what can be seen (or not seen in this situation) (and yeah, french version):

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems instead of hijacking someone else's thread. State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2) in your first post.
PS: And post your question via this link, too: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate

No thanks... It wasn't a question, only a supplement of information for the first post. You should try to help him instead. As I already said I have the exact same thing, so why should I bother reposting it again? One thread per problem is enough, if someone answers to this one, everybody will be happy. :)
PS: I dont like ms news feeds. And I don't use IE.

Only if everybody really does have the same problem. Just because the reported symptoms are the same doesn't mean the cause is the same. Experience has shown that, on the whole, one thread per person is the most effective approach.

I don't see any particular advantage to accessing this newsgroup via the web interface over accessing it via the MS NNTP servers, even when the web interface is working properly (which it isn't at present, I've heard). What is your concern about the NNTP servers?

Please stop arguing and answer the guy's question already! Information eager people like me (and Trepa Hualm, I guess) would like to have this knowledge and check for ourselfs. Why? Just the kind a guy I am. I can't speak for others, though. In addition, why else is this forum public? If you want it personal, make it personal and go email. Just my 2ct.
Oh and by the way, just so you know. I experience the exact same "symptoms". Also after the update of WM update itself.

I don't know if this is a new sympton or not, but sometimes it show's the update list and sometimes windows update won't show update list. Doesn't matter if i restart or not. Actually it has shown the ATI vidocard update twice since my first post and 4 other updates about three days ago. It's not really disturbing, but it's principle of the thing that you can't choose when your given choices and that it just won't install optional updates if you don't choose them from the list of updates.
