Subject: KB971023 installs every day
Every time I shut down my computer, it installs update KB971023.

The Event log has the message "Installation Successful: Windows
successfully installed the following update: Security Update for
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 (KB971023)".

However, on reboot, the update is offered again.

I have tried installing manually, and the install seems to go OK, but
it is still offered again immediately.

I have looked in my TEMP directory (I have it set to E:\TEMP), and
there is a VS80sp1-KB971023-X86-INTL folder, containing two log files
VS80sp1-KB971023-X86-INTL-msi.0.log (25 MB) and VS80sp1-KB971023-X86-
INTL-wrapper.log (57 KB). What should I look for in these files to
diagnose the problem?

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista 64-bit SP2;
Win7 RC; Win7 RTM) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in
your next reply.

Is "Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
(KB971023)" listed in Add/Remove Programs (WinXP) or View Installed Updates
(Vista)?

My apologies - I am running Windows XP
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435 : Service Pack 3)

If I check the "Show Updates" box in Add/Remove Programs,
Under "Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite - ENU" I see
"Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite - ENU
(KB971023)"

Please check the version numbers and modification dates of the files listed in
the KB article:

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971023>

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971023

You may find that only two of the four files listed are actually on your system,
I believe this is normal.  For the files that exist, what are the version
numbers and what are the modification dates?

   Harry.

Very good.  Now, please answer Harry's question before we proceed any
further.  The four (4) specific files & versions you're looking for are as
follows:

Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll

Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.resources.dll

Thanks for trying!
I just tried that.
Still being offered the update.

Steps followed were:

Insert MSDN DVD 3075 "Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite".

Double-click on Update icon in system tray.
Choose Custom Install
Choose Install
Wait a while, until the install says it has finished.
Wait a while longer, until the Update icon reappears.
Double-click it, choose Custom Install, and there the update still is!

It is so long ago, I cannot remember if 3075 is the exact DVD I used
to install VS2005 - there are so many possibilities, including ...

OK,

The files clearly aren't being updated.  Could you please search through the log
files (the ones you already mentioned) for the relevant filenames:

Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll
ReportViewer.exe

Does the log mention any error codes associated with these files?

I suggest you try deleting those two files (just the ones in Microsoft Visual
Studio 8, not the ones associated with the other two products) and then rerun
the update and see what happens.  Naturally, you should make sure you put a copy
of the files in a safe place before deleting them!

Speculating here ... it may be that the copy of Report Viewer associated with
Visual Studio 2008 has "taken over" and the copy from VS2005 is no longer being
used.  In this case running the update will not replace the deleted files, but
if they aren't there the update may stop detecting as needed.  If the update
does replace the deleted files, it should be with the up-to-date versions, in
which case the update should still stop detecting as needed.

   Harry.

I renamed the two files, and ran the installation again. It failed
this time. I cannot find where any error messages have gone - there
appears to be nothing in the event log, and the log files in my temp
directory have not been updated (the date on them is the day before
yesterday).

Here are all the log file lines that mention ReportViewer (I checked
them all, and there are no error messages on the next few lines after
each one):

Um.  Check that you are looking at the right temp directory for the context in
which the installation was run - if you run it yourself, the log files should be
in %TEMP% and if you run it via WU they should be in c:\windows\temp I think.
If I remember correctly, new log files are written, with a .1 or something to
distinguish them from the existing ones.

If this is a personal computer rather than a business one, you can get free
support from Microsoft since this is a security update.  They may have a
solution by now.

c:\windows\temp is empty.

In e:\temp (my %TEMP% folder), there is only one folder called VS80sp1-
KB971023-X86-INTL - there are no other folders with 971023 in their
name.

I have always run the update via the Microsoft Update icon in the
system tray. I have no idea where the update is stored on my hard
disk, or what it is called, so I am unable to run it any other way.

Perhaps a search of the disk drive for that folder name?

You can download it from here:

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&Family...>

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&Family...

It would probably be a good idea to do so, and to run the manually downloaded
version, if only to eliminate the possibility that it is Windows Update itself
which is causing the problem.

Just to thank everyone who helped, because the update has now gone
away. I have no idea which of the things I you suggested fixed it, I'm
afraid. I suspect a reboot was required between one of the fixes and
the update succeeding, which was why none of the fixes appeared to
work at the time.
