Who manufactured it ? Since it's only a month old the OEM is supposed to
provide Support for it.
Error code 646 generally means that one should download the updates
manually as there were too many of them for the system to handle at one
time.

Suggest you install the latest release of the Windows Update Agent(WUA),
if it hasn't been installed already.

Click the Start orb
In the Search field, type in
wuauclt
Under Progams, *right* click wuauclt.exe and choose Properties
Click the Details tab
What's listed next to 'File version' ?

The latest WUA is at v. 7.4.7600.226
If the lastest version is not installed ...

How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help
manage updates on a computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104

The links to the WUA are under the 'More Information' subsection.
Download the one for the specific architecture of the system, eg. if the
system is x86 (32bit), click the download link 'For an x86-based computer'.

*Save* the download. Once it completes close all programs and browsers.
Open the Services console by clicking the Start orb
In the Search filed type in
services.msc
Under Programs, click services.msc
Enter a password, if one is used, and click Continue
If no password is used, click Continue

Locate Background Intelligent Transfer service (BITS)
Click the Stop service link if the service is running.
Locate the Windows Update service.
Click the Stop service link.
Close the Services console.

Now install the previously downloaded WUA and then reboot the system.
See if the system can update now.

Tip: Insert your Office CD into the appropriate drive bay before the next
installation attempt.

Tip: If no joy, see if you can download the "fullfile" version of the
update(s) via the Download Center or Microsoft Update Catalog and then
install it/them manually.
