Recent Automatic Updates included 7 altogether on April 14, one of which was KB908351. I immediately began having problems with several programs, including Word & Publisher -- I could not Save, Save As, Insert a Picture, etc. My son determined through Task Manager that a process "verclsid.exe" was causing the trouble & he found a fix for it. Then on April 19, Automatic Updates reinstalled KB908351 and the problems returned. My son repaired it again, and once again, this morning (April 21), the update was installed a third time. The problems have also returned! The only way I am able to use the Word program is to constantly open the Task Manager and end the verclsid.exe process each time the system locks up. What is going on with this? How do I make this stop?

Assuming that you meant KB908531, here is a troubleshooting article that references known issues with the update and includes a resolution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165
In the meantime, I would recommend temporarily turning off Automatic Updates so that the "problem" update is not re-installed prior to the revised version becoming available.

Do not set your "Automatic updates" to Install those updates automatically. You can set it to notify you when it has new updates, and then you can check them out and see which ones you really want or need, and only install the ones you want. I would also suggest that you only install one at a time, so that if you have problems, you won't have trouble figuring out which one caused the problem. As long as you leave it set to install automatically, you will keep getting the same one back again.

Thanks for posting this, Debbie--removing the verclsid.exe at least allows me to use Word and Publisher and Excel (I was having the same issues as you w/ creating new files though I could edit & save existing docs actually).
It also fixed my inability to use the address bar in IE (I noted someone else having this problem on this forum--can't type in directly though I could still navigate via links/favorites and google. Strangely enough, when I did try to use the address bar directly the E logo turns into a circled R (but that's all folks).
Question: How do I remove the KB908351 update? I've turned off auto update feature but don't know how to remove the original source of the problem.

You should be able to uninstall the update via Add/Remove Programs. If your operating system is XP with SP2, ensure that the "Show updates" checkbox is selected at the top of the Add/Remove programs window. Also, I believe you (and Debbie) are referring to KB908531 not KB908351, so ensure that you look for KB908531 in Add/Remove Programs.

Having the same problem and simply removed the update KB908531 with add/remove programs. Shouldn't Microsoft be providing a new version of this update? or a patch to repair it?

Hi, Waited 1.5 hrs on the phone today to speak to Microsoft support regarding this same issue after auto updates were installed on the 12th and again on the 19th---yes, the same annoying updates.
Microsoft said that this problem is a well-known issue, and in five minutes, fixed it. The update which caused the problem is, indeed......update
KB908531. Uninstalling it will NOT fix the functionality issues as I was told from Microsoft IT. All the IT person did was have me go to the following website: http://yatuc.com/299 when there click enter, then click run, click OK, then immediately restart ( do not choose turn off computer.. just click the restart.)
Voila! Fixed! Amazing. Probably worth the phone waiting time of 1.5...although I'm not sure about that. This works! Penta (5)

Msoft states that only 1000 users have reported a problem with the update. Your 1 1/2 hour phone wait may have had a tiny bit to do with the low number. lol " Uninstalling it will NOT fix the functionality issues as I was told from Microsoft IT" It did for me and anyone else who uninstalled it. lol They're just upset that by releasing the update they also announced a vulnerability in Windows and now that the cat's out of the bag and all hackers are aware they don't want anyone to uninstall the patch. Makes sense, in a way. It'd be good to get the straight scoop one in a while, though.

That has been a more or less inaccurate statement back on Saturday last week. In the meantime they *have* learned that there are far more users having outdated versions of HP's Share-To-Web software and Nvidia video card drivers installed.
That's why they will rerelease a new version of KB908531 on April 25th which will content additional registry fixes *only*. For those running outdated HP's Share-To-Web software and don't want to update or uninstall *that* software, there are multiple files around here, which provide the exact same registry fixes which will be in the rereleased KB908531 update coming next Tuesday. For those still having problems afterwards, updating the Nvidia card drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp may help. Other- wise wait till Tuesday when there will be registry fixes for the *outdated* Nvidia video card drivers (software) will have made it into the revised KB908531 update to come.
