Subject: Windows Update Failed Cancelled - XP
I recently re-formatted and re-installed XP with SP2.  I was then able to get
a few updates including the installer program, but now all I get is "failed"
then shows that it was "cancelled".  I have noticed many others with a
similar problem posted here and other places, but no solutions that work for
my computer.  I included my LOG since it seems that is the first question
from those in the "know".

I did have a problem with the Windows Installer program and did refer to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175/en-us

Method 1 fixed my Windows Installer issue.  I then tried re-installing
Windows Installer v2 and that did not solve this "cancelled" problem.  I was
not able to "uninstall" any updates using the Windows Installer Clean Up
program per Method 3.  My Installer Service was already setup correctly
(Method 4).  I emptied all my user and temp folders per Method 5, and no
luck.  I attempted to try the other Methods listed, but the instructions
either did not apply to XP or I could not figure it out.

Thanks for any help on this.

Try reregistering your Windows Update components, as outlined here:
http://forums.closedsocket.com/viewtopic.php?t=108
Start at step 4.

Closed Socket TN,

Thanks for the possible fix.  I will give it a try as soon I now try and get
my computer to boot.  Prior to your post, I found a new BIOS for my board and
flashed it.  Now my machine is not booting at all...not even to the BIOS
screen.  Thus, I am attempting to clear my CMOS again.  Good times!

I tried that, but no luck for me but I have seen others have success with that.

I did find a SOLUTION for my problem and it has been posted a few times with
others having success...

In C:\Windows\System32 directory rename spupdsvc.exe to spupdsvc.old and
then re-try windows update.  Simple as that.  Updated as expected.  Note that
I did first try what was suggested by "Closed Socket" and that was simple to
try as well.  No idea if both are needed.
