Subject: WINDOWS UPDATE ERROR ON WINDOWS VISTA 64BIT - ERROR CODE 8024402F
I got this error when trying to execute windows update on my computer. I have
got this error since the first time I turn on the computer (SO was
pre-installed), thus there was no spyware no download accellerator and no
antivirus/firewall running.
Is there anyone that can help me?

Since the first time you turned on the computer - it has had this error and
you have not retuirned it/formatted it before you got everything of yours
'settled into place' by now?

Start  free support ticket...
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

However - I would first reset your Internet router/try a different way of
connecting to the Internet if you have one available to you.

For example - you have a Cable Modem or DSL Modem - and a wireless
router/NAT device (separate physical device) on the other side of it to
share your high speed internet with multiple machines and/or to give you
wireless capabilities...  Remove the router/NAT device and connect directly
to the ISP connection (may have to power off/on the modem to do this) and
try your update again.

Remove any third party firewall software you have installed (remove - not
just disable.)

Disable any antivirus/antimalware software you have running *when* you are
trying to update.

Check for any unknown spyware/malware...

We know Vista 64-bit.. But what edition and what service pack?

  Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"?  Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
  --> type in:
    winver
  --> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version"
will give you the rest of the story.  Post _both_ in response to this
 message verbatim.  ;-)

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot.

Download/Run this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=f6f353c0-d00...

Download and install the following patches:

Description of the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 installation
software feature update released April 28, 2009
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955430

Given what you have, you will specifically need this version:

Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB955430)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f8db990c-913...

And the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows Vista x64, and
Windows Server 2008 x64
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=98e83614-c30...

(Follow the directions given under "Additional Information" - three files in
a specific order.)

Reboot.

Ensure you have the latest version of the "Windows Update Agent"...

How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage
updates on a computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104

Specifically, given what you have, you will download/install:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/7.4...

Reboot.

If some are still failing, try the following...

Open a command prompt (Run as Administrator) and type in the following
command:

netsh winhttp reset proxy

Reboot.

Try again.

Still failing?  Probably should start looking in your WindowsUpdate.log file
for answers...

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

You could - if you wish - post the last 50 or so lines of this log file here
for review... Although I suggest you look through it for obvious errors and
the likes first.
